The OHS Officer supports the OHS Team with a variety of duties that assist the implementation of Councils OHS Management System. The role involves generalist health and safety tasks, with key areas of focus including: Emergency Preparedness, OHS data analysis and reporting and Employee Health Monitoring.

• Support OHS Advisors and OHS Business Partner in the implementation of Councils Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) and OHS Strategy.
• Advise and distribute Occupational Health and Safety information to departments in order to support the effective implementation of the Councils Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).

The Waste and Sustainability Department at Hume City Council are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced individual to join the Resource Recovery team.

What you’ll be doing:

• Operating Council’s Resource Recovery Centre in accordance with operational and safety procedures and guidelines. 
• Ensure the RRC is well presented and kept in a neat and tidy manner.
• Responsible for tasks such as the day-to-day receival, sorting, separation, and movement of waste and recyclables at the RRC. This includes the identification, physical recovery, and separation of materials suitable for resale within the Recycled Goods Store and arranging appropriate movement.
• Undertake the removal of contaminates (including asbestos removal) in accordance with training and procedures.
• Contribute to creating and maintaining a safe working environment, and self-initiating responses to a potential hazard or incident and reporting these accordingly.
• Provide professional customer service to a diverse mix of residential and commercial customers.
•  Assist customers with wayfinding within the RRC.

• Attending Council Meetings and Hearings to record the meeting minutes, to assist members of the public to participate in the meeting process and to provide any other assistance required.
• Assisting with all other Council meeting related administrative procedures.
• Attending Executive Leadership Team meetings to assist with agenda development.
• To prepare and process authorisation requests to enable Council staff to be appointed as Authorised Officers under various pieces of state legislation.
• Update and maintain Council’s policy register.
• Ensure that newly adopted policies are published to Council’s website within 24 hours of adoption.
• To assist the Coordinator Governance and Council Business with processing Place Name and Memorial Applications in accordance with Council policy and legislative requirements.
• Maintain all registers and ensure sealing of appropriate documents.
• Entering into Council’s Electronic document management system actions arising from Council meetings; to produce regular reports on Governance ‘open’ actions arising from Council meetings; to close Governance ‘open’ actions arising from council meetings after they have been actioned and produce reports as required.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

• Tertiary studies in governance or administration or Local Government with some experience OR lesser formal qualifications with relevant experience in governance or administration.
• Well-developed verbal and written communication skills including the ability to prepare and provide high quality, accurate documentation, reports and correspondence.
• A commitment and proven ability to provide the highest level of customer service in both an internal and external customer environment.
• Demonstrated ability to organise and plan work to ensure the delivery is within specific timeframes.
• Demonstrated proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook.
• Demonstrated ability to gain cooperation and communicate both verbally and in written form to a broad range of people form diverse backgrounds and cultures.
