About the Team

Group Financial Control is a team of six (6) working towards the common goal of delivering the statutory reporting and financial results for the Challenger Group, along with accounting support for strategic transactions, and monthly consolidated results.

Team members share common tasks and work collaboratively, as well as owning unique tasks depending on your role and experience. The wider finance team includes Life Financial Control, Business Performance, Tax, Treasury, Actuarial, Risk & Compliance, with teams operating in a highly interactive and collaborative manner.

The role

As an Accountant you’ll provide hands on financial control and accounting support to the Group Financial Control team as well as involvement in the Challenger Group interim reporting process (for inclusion in Group ASX external reporting) and monthly management reporting.

You’ll continually drive process improvements and automation initiatives across both the Group, Treasury, and Artega reporting and financial control areas.

Other key responsibilities will include (but aren’t limited to):

- Preparation of monthly balance sheet reconciliations
- Monthly reporting of results and analytical review
- Tax effect accounting and tax return completion
- Consolidation & cashflow reporting (preparation and review of consolidation journals, performing key checks etc.)
- Preparation of audit files and dealing with auditors with regards to audit queries
- Board papers preparation, including workpapers for audit and risk committees; as well as preparation of accounting memos on new standards or areas of reporting.
- Preparation of audit files and dealing with auditors with regards to audit queries
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key business stakeholders and wider finance colleagues.
- Ongoing review of procedures and processes to identify opportunities to improve efficiencies, facilitate process changes and ensure appropriate controls are enforced to manage risks.
- Participation in ad hoc projects including strategic transactions, new system implementation, new accounting standards implementation.
The skills you’ll need.

You’ll be CA / CPA (or equivalent) qualified, with at least 3 years post qualification experience within a financial control’s environment with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. With a meticulous level of attention to detail you’ll have a track record of being able to break down problems, identify key issues and remedy with a range of different options.

A strong user of MS Office in particular MS Excel, you’ll be comfortable working with large amounts of data with the ability to synthesise into meaningful insights and analysis.

You’ll also have

- Working understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
- Experience of identifying, assessing, and evaluating key financial controls in a finance function
- Experience in accounting for mortgages and other financial instruments desired but not essential.
- A working knowledge of the corporate regulatory environment, governance principles, corporate accountability and conduct frameworks and the process for managing risk in a large and complex business – ideally withing financial services.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, you’ll be as comfortable working collaboratively as you are when working independently.

About the opportunity…

We are currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Financial Accountant to join our team, working in our ELMO Software HQ Office. The successful candidate will be responsible for financial planning, analysis, and reporting for our organization, as well as assist with any new ‘special’ projects and become a super user of ELMO’s financial systems. Our client is a global reinsurer we assume risks from other insurers and work with them to develop innovative products. They require an experienced Accountant (Technical Accountant) to join their team in Sydney.

Duties and responsibilities include:
- Review, process/recording Reinsurance Technical Transactions - Proportional Accounts, Profit Commission/Sliding Scale Commissions Statements, Commission Adjustments, Non Proportional Premium Closings, Premium Adjustments, Endorsements additional/return premiums in accordance with the Slips/Wordings.
- Query discrepancies and missing documents with internal and external clients.
- Liaise with Underwriting team for overdue premiums over 120 days.
- Regular review of Reports - Outstanding quarterly accounts, Premium Adjustments invoices, Profit Commission Statements, Endorsements Invoices not received.
- Ensuring accurate and timely claims reserves and payments have been completed.
- Conducting appropriate checks prior to payment processing in order to determine correct amount payable.
- Attending claims reviews in addition to requesting updated loss information/financials/statuses in respect to those losses not updated within past 6 months.
- Assist with internal and external audits.
- Support, reconciliation and data checks for quarter end processing.
- Internal and external Retrocession Accounting.
- Doxis Filing of processed Closings.
- IFRS 17 Implementation, Reporting and Collaboration with Finance Team.

To be considered you will need:
- CPA or CA equivalent - Accounting qualification.
- Have at least 5 years international reinsurance experience.
- Advanced Excel, Word skills.
- Power BI skills advantageous.
- SAP General Ledger system experience is advantageous.
- APRA Connect/D2A Reporting advantageous.
