The Opportunity

Our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility is looking for a Structural Assessment and Design Engineer in our Services & Manufacturing Excellence team based in Port Kembla NSW. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

In this role, you will work with plant departments to identify and manage our plants structural condition. With mentoring from our experienced team, you will enhance our internal technical capability to deliver cost effective, risk based structural inspection. Providing corrective action advice, you’ll work with our inspection technicians and focus on the continuous improvement in uptime and overall operational security.

What Will You Do?

Reporting to the Crane and Structural Inspection Team leader, you will have a hands-on approach and a keen interest to grow and develop yourself technically. You will also:

• provide structural expertise and advice to minimise the business risk of structures whilst ensuring compliance with all applicable statutory policies and standards
• actively participate within engineering networks to maximise intellectual capture of knowledge management
• develop Structural Inspection and reporting processes and procedures utilising internal systems

The painting and finishing department at Springhill is the final process in the manufacture of Colorbond, where coils of steel are painted with our world leading Colorbond coating process and then packaged and despatched to our Australian & International customers.

Reporting into the Paint Finishing Asset Manager, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and improving fixed plant assets within the department. Working within a multi-disciplinary team, your goal will be to enhance operational productivity, achieve asset improvement targets by eliminating defects, maintaining our automation systems, leading improvement initiatives, and coaching team members, all while minimising business risks.

What Will You Do?

Leading and supporting your team to deliver on equipment maintenance and asset performance, you will:

• coach & mentor maintenance team members by identifying and closing technical knowledge gaps
• provide automation control systems technical support, advanced problem-solving and fault-finding
• conduct problem-solving and support Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations to understand critical failures and implement improvement actions.
• lead and facilitate multi-disciplined teams to identify and implement asset and cost improvement projects
• supervise maintenance activities and strive for business improvements and manufacturing excellence

Reporting to the PFD Asset manager, in this role you will operate within a multi-skilled team focusing on the delivery of sustained improvement in process uptime and unit cost reduction to our plant assets. To ensure operational productivity and asset improvement targets are achieved, you will bring an integrated and comprehensive approach to elimination of defects, identifying and leading improvement projects, coaching team members while minimising risk to the business.

What Will You Do?

Leading and supporting your team to deliver on equipment reliability targets and asset performance, you will:

• coach & mentor maintenance team members by identifying and closing technical knowledge gaps
• provide Automation control system technical support, advanced problem-solving and fault-finding
• analyse plant and equipment performance data for patterns and ensure recurring problems are resolved and effective solutions are institutionalised
• lead and facilitate multi-disciplined teams to identify and implement asset and cost improvement projects

Our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility is looking for a Mechanical Engineer in our Energy Services team based in Port Kembla. The Energy Services department is essential to the steel production process, serving as the centralized hub for power generation from our boiler and turbine plant. Energy Services also provide the distribution of power and services across our Port Kembla manufacturing facilities. In this role, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team providing mechanical engineering for a wide range of medium to large power generation capital projects which will include but not be limited to the design, commissioning and install of steam turbines, 18MW alternators and 3MW air compressors. You will also project manage work packages and support the site construction and maintenance works as a part of a multidisciplinary engineering and construction team delivering major projects across the Energy services department.

As a Maintenance Engineer, you will oversee and maintain our manufacturing equipment, machinery and facilities to guarantee their seamless operation. This exciting and well-rounded opportunity that offers both detailed design and project engineering on one of BlueScope’s major capital projects welcomes both junior and experienced Mechanical Engineers who hold a design background within a heavy industrial environment.

What will you do?

Being key to this role, you will:

• provide mechanical and structural design solutions for capital projects.
• provide technical engineering advice regarding suitable solutions for equipment remediation and life extension.
• manage external consultants to deliver detailed engineering solutions
• prepare, schedule, coordinate and monitor the assigned engineering projects
• monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications
• deliver engineering solutions and services to agreed schedules.
• provide quality, cost effective engineering solutions that meet process functional requirements and operating plant life.
• work collaboratively with and provide technical advice to other engineers

More about you

Supported by a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree, you will have experience in applying your engineering knowledge within a heavy industrial environment.

Ideally, you will bring:

• proven knowledge and a track record of mechanical engineering design, including the completion and checking of detailed calculations;
• a general knowledge of Inventor and AUTOCAD as well as other engineering analysis packages;
• good working knowledge of drafting processes;
• other qualifications and experience within project engineering is highly regarded
• a strong safety focus and the ability to work collaboratively with a team and multiple customers.
