Garvan’s 2030: Discoveries to Impact Strategy is designed to galvanise Garvan’s researchers, professional staff, partners, donors and community around our vision of Global leadership in discoveries to impact, and to enable us as an Institute to deliver on that vision – such that Garvan becomes an institute where research discoveries are taken through to patient impact (new treatments, tests and prevention approaches), on a global scale.The OpportunityWe currently have one Research Assistant position available and are seeking a dedicated candidate who will be responsible for planning and conducting experiments under supervision with the lab. The position will also assist with lab maintenance and upkeep of the lab supplies, equipment and procedure. The incumbent will also have close interaction with other post-doctoral scientists, PhD students and Research Assistants in the Invasion & Metastasis group, as well as with the wider Garvan community.The role will be reporting to Professor Paul Timpson (Cancer Invasion and Metastasis group).Key ResponsibilitiesKey areas of responsibility include:Conducting experiments and other duties in a timely, efficient and diligent manner to assist in the overall project progressing expeditiouslyAdopting published methods and interacting with scientists within and outside the GarvanEvaluating and applying alternative methodologies to optimise sensitivity and reproducibilityDeveloping and applying methodologies, as the need arisesInvolved in the appropriate databasing of results (the incumbent should maintain proficiency with computers)Collating and recording experimental data accurately, writing up experimental procedures and contributing to the interpretation of experimental resultsMaking recommendations to the Laboratory Head, Tumour Ecosystems Program Leads and/or Translational Science Pillar Lead about ways of improving techniques, quantitative methods and quality controlProactively and efficiently manage the administrative functions associated with lab managementOrganise resource and equipment issuesSnap shot of benefits The role is a one-year, full-time term positionwith the possibility to extend to two years, with an annual salary of up to $72,300 (dependent on experience) plus 14% superannuation and salary packaging benefits.Generous salary packaging ($15,900 for general household expenses and $2,650 for meal/entertainment expenses)Ongoing training and developmentFlexible work arrangements18 weeks paid parental leaveAdditional day’s leave as Garvan DayEmployee Assistance ProgramDiscounted Health InsuranceLifestyle discounts with our community partnersAbout YouBachelor’s Degree (Honours) in Science with First Class or equivalent related to studies which will have been undertaken in an area of science concerned with molecular biology, cellular biology, cancer biology and/or biochemistryThe willingness to do animal experimentationThe willingness to expand to, learn and use advanced technology including multiphoton microscopy, intravital imaging and advanced single-cell and subcellular microscopy techniquesHigh motivation and commitment to achieving scientific goalsExcellent time management and written skillsA high attention to details and ability to carry out high quality workThe ability to work independently after receipt of training and instructionIdeal candidates will have experience with animal studies, molecular biology, tissue culture, flow cytometry, confocal/multiphoton microscopy, intravital imaging and…
