The Opportunity

Our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility is looking for a Mechanical Engineer in our Energy Services team based in Port Kembla. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

The Energy Services department is essential to the steel production process, serving as the centralized hub for power generation from our boiler and turbine plant. Energy Services also provide the distribution of power and services across our Port Kembla manufacturing facilities. In this role, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team providing mechanical engineering for a wide range of medium to large power generation capital projects which will include but not be limited to the design, commissioning and install of steam turbines, 18MW alternators and 3MW air compressors. You will also project manage work packages and support the site construction and maintenance works as a part of a multidisciplinary engineering and construction team delivering major projects across the Energy services department.

What will you do?

Being key to this role, you will:

• provide mechanical and coordinate structural design solutions for capital projects.
• provide technical engineering advice and support to maintenance regarding suitable solutions for equipment remediation and life extension.
• manage external consultants to deliver detailed engineering solutions.
• prepare, schedule, coordinate and monitor the assigned engineering projects.
• monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications.
• deliver engineering solutions and services to agreed schedules.
• provide quality, cost effective engineering solutions that meet process functional requirements and operating plant life.
• work collaboratively with and provide technical advice to other engineers.

More about you

Supported by a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree, you will have experience in applying your engineering knowledge within the Power generation industry.

Ideally, you will bring:

• proven knowledge and a track record of mechanical engineering design, including the completion and checking of detailed calculations.
• a general knowledge of Inventor and AUTOCAD as well as other engineering analysis packages.
• good working knowledge of drafting processes.
• other qualifications and experience within project engineering is highly regarded.
• strong safety focus; and strong relationship building and the ability to work collaboratively with a team and many customers.

In this opportunity, you will join an experienced and close-knit team who are responsible for the development and curation of our Maintenance Planning Systems across our Manufacturing portfolio. As someone who enjoys working with data and who has an eye for detail, this role will see you supporting all aspects of system administration.  You’ll be supported and mentored by your team, who are genuinely invested in seeing you succeed. 

This role would suit someone who has a background in maintenance who may be interested in broadening their scope into specialist systems expertise and process management.  There will be opportunity to be involved in key projects and upgrades, allowing exposure to new digital technologies and software to support continuous learning and personal development. 

What Will You Do?

You'll be a critical part of the team by taking ownership and acting as central point of coordination, you'll:

• update and maintain key data in our Maintenance Planning System (we use SAP)
• work closely with our plant maintenance teams to resolve problems and issues
• be involved in system upgrades and new software integrations  
• participate in the ongoing development of asset management/maintenance and improvement projects

More About You

It is likely you’ll have a technical background and some experience within a maintenance function, you’ll also have:

• high attention to detail and the ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously
• excellent communication (written and verbal), strong interpersonal skills with an ability to build relationships with a variety of stakeholders
• sound experience and knowledge of computers and software applications
• an interest in IT systems and integrations or a willingness to learn
