Position: General Manager (GM) – Bagala Aboriginal Corporation

Location: Barunga & Wugularr Communities, Northern Territory

Salary Range: $100,000 - $109,504.50

Operating under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act), Bagala Aboriginal Corporation (‘the Corporation’), is a dynamic organisation dedicated to fostering social, cultural, and economic wellbeing within the Barunga community. Through a diverse portfolio of social enterprises and community-focused initiatives, the Corporation plays a pivotal role in promoting self-determination and enhancing local decision-making.
The Corporation is a socially responsible, commercially sustainable, not-for-profit entity. We strive to achieve both social and economic growth within the community while maintaining a strong cultural identity and advancing self-determination. Our commitment to these values shapes our operations and defines how we want to be perceived by our stakeholders and the wider public.

About the Role:
The GM will play a pivotal role in enhancing community productivity and fostering direct community engagement. This position will serve as a key conduit for addressing community requests and ensuring effective communication between the community, staff, and the Directors. The GM will oversee the diverse range of business activities operated by the Corporation, including the community store, accommodation services, commercial transportation, property leases, and the development of cultural and social enterprises such as the Barunga Festival and Bagala Social Club.
The GM will work collaboratively with existing management structures to further develop the social, business, and cultural aspects of the Corporation’s operations. Key responsibilities will include mentoring staff and board members, advising on business operations, and ensuring that the corporation’s activities support the broader social and cultural well-being of the Barunga community. Reporting directly to the Directors, the GM will be responsible for all aspects of operational management across varied business ventures.

About You:

You are a dynamic and community-focused leader with a passion for making a positive impact on social, cultural, and business landscapes. You thrive in environments that demand engagement with diverse community members and are skilled in building meaningful relationships between stakeholders, staff, and directors. With a strong background in business operations and management, you are comfortable overseeing a variety of enterprises including retail, accommodation, transportation, property management, community Social Club, and Law & Culture governance.
Your ability to mentor and develop both staff and board members is one of your key strengths. You enjoy working in a collaborative environment where you can drive operational improvements while ensuring that social and cultural objectives are met. You are flexible, adaptive, and capable of providing strategic guidance that aligns with the broader social and cultural goals of the Barunga community.
In this role, your communication and leadership skills will be essential as you guide the organisation through its diverse activities. If you have a passion for community development, social enterprise, and cultural engagement, this role offers the perfect opportunity to make a lasting impact.

• Proven experience in senior management roles, preferably within Indigenous community organisations or social enterprises.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to drive organisational growth and community impact.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple stakeholders and foster collaborative partnerships.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of financial management, governance, and compliance frameworks.
• Understanding of grant writing and project management processes.
