Sydney Montessori School is a specialist independent school located in the Sutherland Shire, in a wonderful spacious setting close to Gymea station. The school has been operating since 1981, and prides itself on offering an excellent Montessori education from birth to age 12. With increasing enrolments, the school opened a High School component in 2021 commencing with years 7 & 8. The first intakes are capped with very low numbers which the school will grow over subsequent years. Year 11 students will commence in 2025 and grow to Year 12 in 2026. The school plans to open an ‘international student program’ and this position may play a pivotal leadership role in this program.
About the role
Teaching English as a Second Language: As a new and growing school, the Sydney Montessori School (SMS) requires energetic and enthusiastic High School teachers for our secondary program. We have a full time and/or part-time position(s) for 2024.
Fluency in Spanish and ability to teach or tutor high school students up to Year 12 . International student experience and experience or training in the International Baccalaureate program. A knowledge or qualification in Montessori education.
With students from Preschool to upper high school, the successful applicant must be willing to work across all age levels and demonstrate an understanding of the needs of students at different levels. Full time position available.
Candidates must be degree qualified, with the Degree transcribed/approved by the NSW Education Standards Authority.
Commencement Date: ASAP
The successful candidate will be organised and hard-working and will have excellent interpersonal skills. They should be self-motivated and able to work independently, but also be a team-player.
A passion for language and teaching or tutoring second language students, both within and beyond the curriculum, is ideal. The ability to teach in other subject areas or work within long day care, primary or secondary will be of assistance whilst we are in our initial start-up / growth phase.
Tasks Include:
assessing the extent of language difficulties in students for whom English is a second language
teaching students individually and in small groups out of the regular classroom, and assisting students within normal classroom settings
teaching students English language skills using a variety of methods including lecture and visual demonstration
providing assistance to other classroom teachers by designing special teaching programs for students with English language difficulties
designing and producing teaching materials and adapting existing materials
preparing course outlines and goals
assigning lessons, correcting homework, and preparing and grading exams
analysing, recording and reporting progress to regular classroom teachers, parents and students
The Environment
The school will build on the existing Montessori philosophy and as a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate, we will develop new courses to implement the IB Diploma program once we achieve authorisation.
The role involves teaching in our Secondary program, however, teachers may also deliver lessons as specialists to the upper Primary students if appropriate. Our school provides a wonderful Primary Montessori learning environment in which each child can grow to their full potential in all spheres of their development – social, intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual in accordance with Montessori philosophy. This approach is being continued and extended in establishing our High School program and aligning the secondary program to the IB Diploma programs. There is an expectation that the successful applicant will participate fully in the life of the School, including its co-curricular and pastoral programs.
With small class sizes and new high school buildings opening early term 2, teachers have access to modern well resourced facilities.

Teaching with Us
The role of the teacher includes preparation of the indoor and outdoor environment, leading and monitoring the learning of each child, ensuring that the outcomes of the IBO and the NESA curriculum are achieved and communicating student development to parents. Working as a member of the educational team, teachers will develop and document courses and discuss and plan for individual children to ensure that we achieve the best outcomes for every child.
The position would suit an enthusiastic teacher who is committed to the development of each child as an individual, who can engage students in their learning and who is committed to work as part of a team to grow our new High School. Experience in, or knowledge of, the NSW HSC curriculum or the International Baccalaureate Programs and its pedagogical approach would be considered an advantage. It is not a mandated requirement if the staff member demonstrates a willingness to continue to learn and/or undertake training in the IB DP program.

Skills and experience
The position(s) would suit an enthusiastic person currently familiar with teaching second language students; fluency in spanish; experience or knowledge of student needs (Long Day Care, Primary and /or Secondary students); We expect to employ enthusiastic staff who are committed to the development of each child as an individual, who can engage students in their learning and who are committed to work as part of a team to grow our new High School.
Experience in, or knowledge of, the NSW (NESSA) curriculum and syllabuses, middle years teaching approaches, the Montessori philosophy and/or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and its pedagogical approach would be considered an advantage.
Candidates must be degree qualified, with the Degree transcribed/approved by the NSW Education Standards Authority.
Whilst the initial appointments will work across a range of student ages the ability to demonstrate additional specialist subject teaching knowledge and breadth of subjects to Year 12 may be an advantage as our school programs will be expanded in the future.
A valid Working with Children Check clearance is required.
