AEMO at the Heart of Energy
AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this.
We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around Character, Commitment, and Connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant mission in the energy sector.

AEMO’s System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation, supporting AEMO’s mission of designing a sustainable energy system that provides affordable, safe and reliable energy for all Australians.
The Future Energy Systems department sits within AEMO’s System Design division and has accountability for evolving an engineering roadmap to 100% renewables and implementing a number of strategic technical projects identified within it. This includes providing a holistic view of the engineering needs of the changing energy system, helping prioritise approaches that resolve the most pressing technical issues, and initiating action across industry to enable the NEM to advance operational capability for 100% renewables.

About the role
The Senior Engineer role in the Engineering Strategy team will play a lead role in providing technical support in ensuring the long-term security and reliability of the National Electricity Market power system through the development and delivery of the Engineering Roadmap. This includes providing technical advice, overseeing power system studies and data analysis, coordinating projects that improve the design of the power system and energy market, and providing technical leadership to other team members.

What you will be doing
• Lead projects to identify, quantify, and resolve the challenges that are emerging in the power system as the generation mix and energy market evolves to greater proportions of non-synchronous generation and customer engagement.
• Lead internal and external stakeholder engagement and consultations for the work being undertaken including provision of strategic advice across AEMO.
• Coordination of power system studies and investigations into forthcoming key events and milestones and applying these findings to improve operational and planning processes.
• Facilitate the development of agreed company positions on future technical needs and proposed regulatory changes, coordinating multi-disciplinary teams to leverage the full range of skillsets across AEMO.
• Develop and support a range of communications including reports and recommendations suitable for the Executive, Board, and external publication, clearly articulating complex technical matters in an accessible way to a broad audience, and delivery of presentations to key audiences as appropriate.
• Deliver projects and assignments to achieve agreed targets for scope, time, quality, and cost.
We offer flexibility with this role, available as either a permanent full time or part time position.
What you will bring to the role

Experience and Knowledge
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate multidisciplinary projects over a wide range of power system operational or planning issues.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare, review, and finalise high quality technical documentation and reports.
• Demonstrated ability to analyse, interpret and summarise complex data and reports.
• Proactive and self-driven, outcomes focussed in working towards strategic objectives and ability to build and maintain constructive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Desirable
Strong experience in the energy industry with experience in power system design, operation, and analysis tools such as PSS/E and PSCAD. Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles, electricity transmission, distribution, generation and market systems.

In return some of our benefits to you
