Registered Nurse - Surgery

Acute nursing skills and experience are all that’s required to start your cancer nursing career at Peter Mac.
OUR PATIENTS
Our surgical team cares for patients with a range of cancers including breast, skin and plastics, colorectal, upper gastrointestinal, urology, gynaecology, sarcoma, and head and neck. We care for patients post-operatively following a range of major and minor surgeries with both curative and palliative intent. Patient acuity and complexity is often high and we adjust our nurse to patient ratio as required to ensure high quality, safe patient care.
OUR TEAM
Our multidisciplinary surgical team has an exceptional culture of clinical learning and support, helping every team member to advance their career. We work closely with our Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) team to ensure our patients receive evidence based post-operative nursing care. As a nurse within the team, you will have access to a dedicated practice development nurse and a team of clinical nurse specialists to support your development.
OUR FACILITIES
The surgical ward is a 32-bed unit located on level 6 at Peter Mac. Our patients enjoy single and double rooms with a patient entertainment system, online meal ordering and access to our communal spaces within and external to the ward. Peter Mac sits within the Parkville precinct and is easily accessible by public transport, bicycle or car with staff parking available onsite. Peter Mac also boasts great coffee and food at our multiple cafés.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We offer every nurse who joins us an eight-day tailored orientation program including:
• Hospital and nursing orientation
• Clinical skills workshop
• Electronic Medical Record (EMR) training
• Your Thoughts Matter – SKINDEEP and RESPECTS training
• Smart Moves – clinical manual handling training
• Supernumerary clinical shifts with our specialist surgical nurses
• Individualised clinical education and support tailored to your acute nursing experience
You will also have free enrolment into three full day short courses within your first 12 months of employment. At Peter Mac, we have the leading clinical cancer nursing education and research team in Australia. The Academic Nursing Unit currently offers 17 short courses ranging from introduction to cancer through to specific surgical, tracheostomy and epidural courses and offers opportunity to be involved in and develop clinical research skills.
The Academic Nursing Unit team also provide support and guidance to pursue postgraduate qualification in cancer nursing through the Department of Nursing at the University of Melbourne.
In addition to clinical learning opportunities, you will also have access to our Compassion and Resilience Education (CARE) program, a full day course which focuses on wellbeing and selfcare for nurses.

Remuneration under the Nurses and Midwives (Victorian Public Sector) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2020-2024 will be from YP2 - RN Grade 2 Year 1 ($67,527.20) to YP9 - RN Grade 2 Year 8 ($95,378.40). Applicants to this role should provide a covering letter outlining relative key skills and experience to assist us with our assessment.
