The Opportunity

Our Australian Steel Markets business is looking for a Health, Safety and Environment Professional to support our Brisbane and regional sites.

Working as part of a large national safety team you will have the opportunity to be part of an organisation who is always focused on ensuring we are up to date with new methods and advancements in Safety, Health and Wellbeing.

What Will You Do?

With responsibility for multiple sites across Brisbane and our regional network, you will collaborate with our frontline management teams to coach, develop, and support our manufacturing business to achieve its health and safety requirements. In this dynamic role, where no day is the same, you will be exposed to a variety of different risk profiles – providing you with the opportunity to enhance and grow your expertise.  You will:

• oversee governance requirements, supporting the team with conducting and reporting due diligence activities
• support implementation of BlueScope’s Health, Safety and Environment plan
• coach and support leaders to understand their risk profile and critical controls, and actively seek higher levels of control
• deliver HSE advice to our leaders, thinking beyond the quick fix, to promote continual improvement in the engagement of people and management of risk
• oversee serious incident investigations, facilitating engagement to understand how work is done and adoption of fit for purpose solutions

About this opportunity

The primary purpose is to plan and execute the mechanical maintenance function at VIP Packaging Brendale, whilst providing support to other departments i.e. projects, production.

You will be also responsible for ensuring the maintenance function is delivering best outcomes with accurate and timely response to operations.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• Coordinate and balance the workload, assign scheduled tasks and mechanical breakdown tasks for site Mechanical Trades and Contractors
• Manage and maintain the MEX maintenance schedule for mechanical works at the Brendale site
• Oversee the Maintenance Planner raise and Issue MEX Works Orders from Requests
• Lead and or participate in Continuous Improvement Projects to achieve improved Safety, Productivity, Quality & Reliability
• Develop and maintain spare parts inventory
• Liaise with Electrical Trades and Electrical Supervisor
• Actively drive a culture of behavioral safety and preventative safety measures and activities.  
• Ensure that work is carried out in a safe working manner (Take5 & LOTO) and maintaining safe working environments.

Your skills and experience

To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

• Five (5) years in manufacturing processes.
• Maintenance planning, scheduling and supervision
• Understanding of “good practice” preventative maintenance strategies
• Experience with MEX or equivalent maintenance operating system
• Highly developed safety awareness and ability to drive a safety culture
• Strong analytical aptitude, an ability to improve planning processes and drive change

As a Site Manager, you will oversee commercial construction projects with a focus on creating meaningful and purposeful outdoor spaces for educational establishments, including playgrounds and sensory nature play areas. You will lead a small, dedicated team and work closely with subcontractors to ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the highest standard. This role is hands-on, collaborative, and perfect for someone who loves bringing creative ideas to life through practical execution.

Key Responsibilities

• Project Leadership: Manage the end-to-end delivery of construction projects, from brickwork to landscaping and timber structures.
• Team Collaboration: Lead a small site team and subcontractors, fostering a cooperative and positive work environment.
• Client Communication: Act as the key point of contact for clients, including school staff and government bodies, ensuring smooth communication and project alignment.
• Hands-On Execution: Get involved in the practical side of things – from overseeing the work to jumping on the tools and leading from the front.
• Safety and Compliance: Ensure all safety standards are met and maintained throughout the project.
• Tools: Understanding of how to use QR codes, Smartsheets, and Workbench for tracking project progress but comfortable with a paper based processed whilst new technology is being implemented in the coming months.

Qualifications & Skills

• Trade-qualified carpenter or builder with experience in timber structures.
• Hands-on experience in site management, ideally within landscaping or civil construction.
• Skid Steer or Excavator experience required.
• Leadership skills with the ability to manage both teams and multiple projects.
• Great communicator, comfortable liaising with senior project managers and school stakeholders.
• Experience working with children’s play areas is a bonus but not essential.
• Working with Children Card (preferred).
