As a Senior Collections Officer, you will negotiate payment plans, manage overdue accounts, assess for legal escalation, and handle financial hardship cases. You’ll also oversee accounts in liquidation or bankruptcy, address escalations, and maintain compliance with debt collection laws while collaborating with the team.

What you will be doing:

• Work directly with customers to negotiate affordable and sustainable payment arrangements that aim to bring overdue accounts back into good standing.
• Employ skip tracing techniques and tools to locate customers
• Conduct thorough reviews of accounts, analysing payment histories, previous collection efforts, and current financial status to determine the best course of action for recovery.
• Assess when accounts should be escalated to external solicitors or collection agencies for legal action. Prepare and present supporting documentation, including payment history, due diligence, and any efforts made to resolve the debt before escalation.
• Evaluate and manage financial hardship cases, conducting Statements of Financial Position and determining the best solutions for both the customer and the business.
• Handle administrative tasks related to accounts under liquidation or bankruptcy
• Be the first point of contact for escalated cases, resolving complex or sensitive customer issues with professionalism and expertise.
• Collaborate effectively with team members to provide guidance on challenging accounts.
• Maintain accurate and detailed records of customer interactions, payment plans, and legal processes. Regularly report on account statuses, escalations, and recovery progress to the Collections Manager and Head of Collections.
• Stay informed of relevant laws and regulations related to debt collection, bankruptcy, and financial hardship to ensure all actions comply with industry standards.

Reporting into our Payroll Manager and working closely with our Payroll Officer, your day to day responsibilities your day to responsibilities will include:

Payroll Processing

• Managing and overseeing the preparation and processing of our Australian payroll, including both monthly and fortnightly cycles.
• Ensure timely and accurate salary and wage disbursements as per company policies, Awards, and Employment Contracts.

Foreign Payroll

• Working with outsourced service providers and managing the payroll processing requirements for foreign jurisdictions, ensuring compliance with respective legislation/regulations where applicable.

Payroll Compliance

• Maintaining compliance with legislative requirements such as PAYG, superannuation, payroll tax, and employment standards 
• Ensuring adherence to tax regulations and other statutory requirements

Payroll System Management

• Utilising and maintaining the payroll aspects of our HCM and payroll systems to ensure accuracy and efficiency in payroll processing

Payroll Accounting

• Accurately prepare and post payroll-related accounting journal entries, ensuring alignment with financial reporting requirements

Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication

• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders including HR, finance, and employees to provide guidance and address payroll-related queries

• Provide advice and support on complex payroll issues and act as the escalation point for the Payroll Officer

Continuous Improvement

• Identify areas for improvement within payroll processes and work with stakeholders to implement changes for enhanced performance and compliance
• Foster a culture of continual professional development and process optimisation in the payroll function

Leadership & Development

• Provide leadership and guidance to the Payroll Officer, offering mentorship and training to support their professional growth
• Promote a positive and supportive team environment within the payroll department

What you’ll be doing:

• Liaise with internal departments to ensure an appropriate advocacy agenda is developed and executed for emerging community service issues.
• Contribute to development and implementation of key strategic projects for the City Services & Living Division, including strategies, policies, programs, projects, and events, to offer provision in achievement of identified Divisional and/or team objectives.
• Maintain a high-level understanding of key internal or external matters that could impact the City Services & Living Division, including implications arising from changes to legislation, regulation, policies, and strategies, ensuring staff within the division are aware of key risks and opportunities for improvement.
• Provide key stakeholders and community organisations with strategic advice and analysis to support their planning and advocacy for services or programs to meet community needs across the municipality.
• Coordinate stakeholder forums to guide the development and implementation of community services issues.
• Influence and liaise with key stakeholders to support the planning and policy implementation across the Division.
• Build collaborative and respected relationships with internal and external stakeholders to advance strategic priorities and resolve complex issues.
• Participate in and resource the development of all Divisional service planning processes, providing guidance and support as required.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

• Coordinate the preparation of Divisional submissions, reporting and applications.
• Ability to build collaborative and respected relationships with internal and external stakeholders to advance strategic priorities and resolve complex issues.
• Represent the City Services & Living Division in cross business projects and cross functional teams and various internal and external forums as required.
•  Experience in advancing complex work programs and ensuring adherence to key timelines, including proven project management skills.
• In conjunction with the Executive Officer City Services & Living, co-ordinate responses to a range of existing and emerging community services / City Services & Living issues, providing oversight, and ensuring delivery of outcomes in a timely manner.
• Demonstrated experience in developing, influencing, and implementing public policy and strategies.
• Highly developed written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports, submissions, papers, and correspondence for authorisation by the Executive Officer City Services & Living, as required.
