What can you expect?
An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced tax professional to join Marsh McLennan (MMC) as a Tax Manager in Sydney or Melbourne. You will be a member of MMC’s Asia Pacific Tax team, reporting to the Regional Tax Lead, Pacific, based in Sydney. Working closely with MMC Tax colleagues in and outside the Asia Pacific region, you will be responsible for assisting with tax matters across all of MMC’s business activities in the Pacific region (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and other relevant territories), including providing advice on application of direct and indirect taxes, revenue authority reviews/audits, key projects, and merger and acquisition transactions.
Whilst this role will not include direct involvement in various tax filing requirements, you will be required to assist with reviewing tax reporting and compliance. You will also assist with risk control procedures as well as partnering closely with other MMC stakeholders to make desirable enhancements to the upskilling of the tax reporting and compliance capabilities embedded within the Controllership and wider business team.

We will count on you to:
Provide tax advisory support and direction to various MMC colleagues on general tax matters in the Pacific region.
Identify risks and opportunities, as well as plan, design and manage tax projects to contribute to the management of MMC’s effective tax rate and tax compliance requirements. This would include working with relevant business functions across the Pacific region to ensure supportable tax positions for business transactions, reviewing permanent establishment exposures, withholding tax consequences, etc.
Provide analysis and recommendations of tax positions, and effectively engage with key stakeholders in and outside the MMC Tax team to ensure communication and understanding of such matters. This includes supporting (where applicable) MMC’s tax filing positions, providing guidance on tax law changes, and tax implications for MMC’s M&A activities, restructuring initiatives, treasury funding issues, dividend flows, equity investment/capitalization issues, etc.
Work closely with the business areas to provide tax guidance and support on corporate income tax, indirect taxes, transfer pricing, and legal entity structures, developing a tax culture with the business and other functional areas (finance and non-finance).
Support the quarterly and year-end group tax reporting processes for the Pacific MMC entities. Review the quarterly US GAAP income tax provisions prepared by Controllership which are reported to MMC Tax in the USA. Review and contribute to the determination of provisioning of open tax issues based on submissions made by Controllership.
Review the tax returns and tax summary memorandums of the key Pacific MMC entities produced by Controllership and outsourced service providers in order to support the Controllership in determining appropriate tax filing positions, as well as to identify tax risks and opportunities.
Manage regional tax reviews, audits and dispute resolution initiatives in conjunction with wider Finance group.

Work in conjunction with MMC’s global Transfer Pricing team to manage transfer pricing analysis of all intercompany transactions from a tax perspective and characterisation of services for tax purposes.
Maintain a current awareness of local tax legislation and case law that would impact the company's operations and establish proactive plans accordingly, for both cash and financial tax reporting purposes.
Provide appropriate levels of tax training to MMC colleagues, when required.
What you need to have:
Bachelors Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related degree.
5-8 years of relevant tax experience (covering direct tax, indirect tax and transfer pricing), ideally gained from a public accounting practice and/or in-house tax positions.
A proven track record of working on tax issues in the Pacific region.
An understanding of US tax principles and US GAAP will be advantageous.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, managing multiple stakeholders.
Ability to work effectively in a matrix environment.
Ability to prioritise competing tasks.
