The Centre for Planetary Health and Food Security emphasises that food security and human well-being depend on the health of our ecosystems. Our researchers seek ways to improve the health of both natural and managed ecosystems with research that cuts across disciplines and creates an impact globally.

The Research Fellow will be responsible for contributing to a GRDC-funded project focusing on the genetic and sustainable management of Ascochyta blight in Chickpea (Phase 2). Responsibilities include obtaining infected plant samples, curating an isolate collection and database, conducting pathology bioassays, extracting RNA and DNA for sequencing, and applying bioinformatic pipelines for genomic data analysis. The role involves molecular and plant pathology experimental approaches, and the generation and analysis of next-generation sequencing data, to support research in identifying genetic and epigenetic drivers of pathogenicity in Ascochyta rabiei and developing molecular markers for diagnostic assays.

The Research Fellow will be responsible for

• Sourcing infected plant samples and Ascochyta rabiei isolates through collaboration with state pathologists, researchers, and industry, which will require occasional travel.
• Isolating Ascochyta rabiei from infected material, maintaining cultures for experiments, archiving isolates for long-term storage and curating an isolate database.
• Conducting molecular, pathology, and genomic experiments contributing to the research objectives of the Research Group.
• Analysing, summarising, and visualising experimental and genomic datasets.
• Contributing to milestone reports, scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, and related funding applications.
• Attending and presenting scientific outputs at broader research program meetings, industry updates, and scientific conferences.

This is a fixed term (2.5 years), part-time (80%) position and will be primarily based at the Griffith University Nathan campus. As Griffith is a multi-campus University you may be required to work across other campus locations.

Salary Range
The full time equivalent base salary will be Research Fellow Grade 1 range $86,526 - $101,354 per annum + 17% superannuation. The total FTE package will be in the range $101,236 - $118,585 per annum. (The salary will be pro-rata for part time hours).

We are seeking a passionate Research Fellow (Grade 1) – Exercise Physiologist who will coordinate and contribute to a research trial with mental health services and organisations. 

Within this role you will work with Doctor Justin Chapman within the Centre for Mental Health in Professor Amanda Wheeler’s research group.

The Research Fellow will work on a project that is a clinical trial of exercise for people with severe mental illness. You will be accountable for day-to-day operations including resourcing, scheduling, prioritisation, task coordination within a team context, as well as reporting and delivering objectives and deliverables within agreed time frames and budgets.

Salary Range
The full time equivalent base salary will be Academic Level RF1 range $86,526 - $90,775 per annum + 17% superannuation. The total FTE package will be in the range $101,235 - $106,206 per annum.

To be eligible for a GUIAPRS, an applicant must:

1. be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, who identify themselves as such, and are accepted by the community with which they are associated with as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
2. be commencing or enrolled in a HDR program (for which GUIAPRS support is available) at Griffith University.
3. not be receiving income from another source to support the candidate’s general living costs that provides a benefit greater than 75% of the GUIAPRS stipend rate to undertake the proposed program. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in developing innovative nitrogen fertilisers for diversified agricultural systems. This position involves conducting both glasshouse and field experiments to evaluate the effects of these novel fertilisers on plant performance, soil health, and environmental impacts. Key responsibilities of this position include;

• Design and conduct glasshouse and field experiments to meet the research objectives of the externally funded projects.

• Assist in developing research proposals and support the mentoring and supervision of higher degree research candidates.

The Research Fellow Grade 1 position will sit within Griffith University’s Centre of Planetary Health and Food Security and will be associated with the project “Life in the Shipping Lane; The Cost of Increasing Disturbance to Whales”, which is funded by an Australian Research Council Linkage grant. This project represents a community collaboration between Griffith University, The Port of Brisbane Pty. Ltd., Healthy Land and Water, Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI), and The Stradbroke Flyer,  as well as The University of the Sunshine Coast, Murdoch University and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

To be carry out this role you will be required to:

• Conduct boat-based line transect surveys for humpback whale distribution and abundance estimates.
• Manage students and volunteers for boat-based fieldwork.
• Work closely with the Humpback Whale Sentinel Programme for collation of joint data and preparation of joint reports and publications.
• Work closely with community groups and traditional owners.
• Perform a range of forecasting activities utilising diverse modelling approaches, including bioenergetic modelling, Population Consequences of Disturbance (PCoD) modelling, as well as environment-economy modelling.

About you
To be successful you will also have:

• A PhD in a related field (e.g. Cetacean ecology, mammalian physiology, or environmental economics).
• Competency with R or Python data processing and strong modelling skills, including familiarity with bioenergetic models.
• Capacity to work closely with community and industry partners.

• Strong publication record.
• Evidence of a high level of English written and oral communication skills.
• Project management and stakeholder engagement experience, and the ability to work independently as well as within a team.
• Prior experience in Antarctic and Southern Ocean ecology, ecosystem management, and/or policy would be favourably considered, as would successful prior experience in engaging Traditional Owners in research and merging traditional knowledge into research.
