Tree Maintenance Officer

In collaboration with the Area Arborist and Field Arborist, assist in the implementation of Council’s Tree Maintenance Program to ensure that trees are in a condition which benefits both the community and the Council.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Implement works where required, as determined by industry standard tree assessment criteria to maintain trees in a safe and healthy condition.
  • Prune and/or remove trees within the municipality where necessary, using elevated work platforms and associated equipment to carry out the tasks safely.
  • Assist in the removal of fallen or damaged trees following storms and other emergency situations including work outside normal working hours as required.
  • Ensure work site is appropriately signed, and that works are performed in a manner that ensures the safety of staff and the public.
  • Ensure that tools and equipment are maintained in good working condition e.g. fuelled, oiled, mixing fuel when required, sharpened, etc.
  • Implement Council’s People and Culture Policies regarding Equal Employment Opportunity, Occupational Health and Safety, and Training and Development.
  • Assist crew members to ensure the safe operation of associated plant and equipment including demonstration and documentation of safe and responsible work practices, use, operation, and handling of chain saws, pruning and associated equipment in accordance with approved safety standards.
  • Assist in identifying sites for tree planting throughout the municipality in underdeveloped parks, nature strips, median strips, roundabouts, and car parks.
  • Undertake tree planting to be carried out in accordance with Council’s Street and Reserve Tree Policy.
  • Assist in the gathering of data for indicators with the effective monitoring of the service.
  • Assist in the identification of training needs and implementation of training to improve work practices of self and group.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

  • Knowledge, skills, and experience in the competent operation of general pruning equipment and practices (AS 4373)
  • Demonstrated ability and competence in the operation of Woodchippers, chainsaws (mechanical and hydraulic) and elevated work platform.
  • Proven ability to use electronic works management systems in office and on field devices.

Required Certifications & Qualifications: 

  • Relevant experience of general pruning equipment and practices (AS 4373)
  • Progress toward achieving Certificate III or higher qualification in Arboriculture.
  • UET20312 Certificate II in ESI – Powerline Vegetation Control
  • Chainsaw Level 2
  • Endorsed Truck License up to 13.9 tonnes GCM.
  • E.W.P Operator’s Certificate
  • Current driver’s licence.
