Job description:
• Apply required materials to fill gaps in surfaces. Fill cracks, holes, or joints using caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.
• Protect structures or surfaces near work areas to avoid damage. Cover surfaces with drop sheets or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
• Smooth surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool, or sanding machines.
• Review work specifications to determine work requirements. Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors or homeowners to determine work requirements.
• Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finished coats.
• Apply paint to surfaces. Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, or other finishes to equipment, buildings, or other structures, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers.
• Assemble temporary equipment or structures. Set up ladders to work above ground level.
• Mix substances or compounds needed for work activities. Mix and match colours of paint, stain, or varnish with oil or thinning and drying additives to obtain the desired colours and consistencies.
• Estimate materials requirements for projects. Calculate amounts of required materials and estimate costs, based on surface measurements or work orders.
• Smooth surfaces with abrasive materials or tools. Polish final coats to specified finishes.
• Prepare surfaces for finishing. Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations, and sand rough spots to ensure that finishes will adhere properly.
• Clean surfaces in preparation for work activities. Remove old finishes by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, or using water or abrasive blasting.
• Protect structures or surfaces near work areas to avoid damage. Remove fixtures such as pictures, doorknobs, lamps, or electric switch covers prior to painting.
• Apply sealants or other protective coatings. Waterproof buildings, using waterproofers or caulking.
• Apply decorative or textured finishes or coverings. Use special finishing techniques, such as sponging, ragging, layering, or faux finishing.
Qualifications/Attributes:
• Must hold a minimum Certificate III in Painting or at least 3 years of relevant work experience in lieu of the qualification.
• Must possess at least a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience.
• Must have a white card.
• Manual dexterity with excellent balance to work on scaffolding, ladders etc.
• Must have Victorian trade license and Manual Driver’s license.
• Ability to present well and communicate clearly and strong work ethics.
• Proven experience as a painter and conscientious with great attention to details.
• Excellent knowledge of painting material and how to select, mix and apply them.
• Solid knowledge of commercial and/or construction painting techniques
• Aptitude in using appropriate tools (brushes, caulking guns etc.)
Salary Range: $70,000 – $80,000 p.a. excluding superannuation.
