Disability Support Worker - Position Description
(Full Time Employee)

As a Disability Support Worker with Assist Ability Australia, you will provide essential care, assistance, and support to individuals with disabilities in various settings, including homes, community, and residential environments. You will assist participants with personal care, mobility, and communication, contributing to their overall well-being and independence. You will also support participants in following therapy plans, ensuring that their care is person-centred and respectful of their individual needs.

Key Responsibilities

Personal Care:
- Assist participants with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and eating.
- Ensure dignity and respect in all aspects of personal care.

Mobility and Physical Assistance:
- Support participants with movement and positioning, including transfers using hoists or mobility aids.
- Help participants engage in physical activities, ensuring safety and comfort. Health and

Medication Support:
- Administer medications as prescribed, ensuring adherence to medication schedules and maintaining accurate records. (training provided)
- Assist with basic health tasks, such as changing dressings, supporting rehabilitation
exercises, or following therapy plans.

Communication Support:
- Aid participants with communication needs, including using communication devices or alternative methods of communication.
- Facilitate social interaction, ensuring participants can express their preferences and concerns.

Therapeutic Support:
- Follow therapy or behavioural intervention plans, especially for participants with dementia, intellectual disabilities, or behavioural challenges.
- Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team, including case managers, therapists, and other support workers, to ensure coordinated and holistic care.
- Implement behaviour support plans, strategies, and interventions designed to promote positive behaviour and reduce challenging behaviours, ensuring the safety and well-being of clients and others.

Monitoring and Reporting:
- Observe and report any changes in participants' physical or mental conditions to relevant supervisors.
- Record care activities, incidents, and progress accurately in participant notes.
- Report complaints or concerns regarding care immediately.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of support provided, progress made, incidents, and any other relevant information, ensuring compliance with organisational policies and procedures.

Emotional and Social Support:
- Offer emotional support, active listening, and companionship to individuals, fostering positive relationships and promoting mental well-being.
- Support participants in achieving personal goals and enhancing their quality of life.
- Provide person-centred support to individuals with disabilities, focusing on their unique needs, goals, and preferences.
- Support individuals in participating and engaging with their local communities, including accompanying them to social events, recreational activities, and appointments

Duties may include
- Domestic support and household tasks
- Assistance or preparation of meals
- Support with assistive technology
- Support to appointments and grocery shopping
- Showering and personal care assistance
- Dressing assistance and hygiene needs
- Medication assistance

Qualifications & Experience:
- A Certificate III or higher qualification in Individual Support (Disability) or another relevant equivalent qualification or 1 year of relevant full-time experience in lieu
- At least one year of relevant experience in disability support, personal care, or a related field.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with individuals, their families, and the wider support network.
- Empathy, patience, and a genuine commitment to supporting individuals with Disabilities.
- Ability to follow instructions, adapt to changing circumstances, and make sound judgments in challenging situations.
- Basic understanding of behaviour management strategies, first aid, and medication administration.
- Knowledge of disability rights, legislation, and person-centered approaches

Compliance Documents:
- Current driver's licence
- Car Registration Details
- Car Insurance Certificate showing Comprehensive Car Insurance
- Access to a reliable vehicle (if required for client transportation).
- NDIS Workers Screening Check
- Certificate of completion for NDIS worker orientation module (Quality, Safety and You)
- Infection Prevention & Control Module (Not older than 12 months)
- Valid Working with Children Check
- Current First Aid (Less than 3 years old) & CPR (Not older than 12 months) Certificates
- National Police Check, not older than 12 months
- If you are a visa holder, a copy of your VEVO Check indicating working rights
