Part of the Waste and Sustainability department, the Waste Strategy and Support unit delivers a variety of services, including but not limited to, waste strategy implementation, community education, stakeholder engagement, kerbside reform, policy development, administration and support services, and customer service.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide effective leadership and supervision to Business Support (Waste and Sustainability) group employees, to engage and inspire employees to demonstrate organisational values aligned behaviour, and to optimally achieve service standards. 
  • Supervise, lead, and maximise the performance of the Business Support (Waste and Sustainability) group by participating in in the induction, recruitment, performance management and training (internal and external) of employees.
  • Supervise the services delivered by the Business Support (Waste and Sustainability) group, including ordering and provision of consumables and catering, meeting room set-up, meeting agenda development and distribution, minute taking, data entry, customer service, purchase order creation and receipting, distribution of service requests, and administrative support, ensuring service continuity, the achievement of required standards, and the provision of quality support and customer service is maintained. 
  • Allocate incoming tasks, requests, and activities, to Business Support Officers based on workloads and capabilities, accommodating employee work patterns and stakeholder requests.
  • Support, track, and communicate the implementation of actions and the achievement of targets from Council’s strategic documents, including the Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2022-2030. Provide regular status updates and reports to the Manager Waste and Sustainability, Coordinator Waste Strategy and Support and other Coordinators. 
  • Ensure the timely and effective delivery of allocated actions from the department Business Plan. 
  • Remain engaged in, and informed of, changes within the broader waste, resource recovery and local government sectors, suggesting and researching potential changes.
  • Ensure the Business Support (Waste and Sustainability) group is customer focussed, responding to all internal and external enquiries and issues in a timely, accurate and professional manner, in line with Council’s policies and procedures. 
  • Actively monitor the achievement of service quality and delivery benchmarks, including Service Level Agreements, to meet department, Council, customer, and community expectations.
  • Provide input into the development of the Waste Strategy and Support unit's budget. 
  • Provide high-quality, professional written and verbal reports, presentations, and advice to the Coordinator Waste Strategy and Support, Manager Waste and Sustainability, other departments, and other agencies.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills, with a proven ability to manage and guide a small team of administrative or customer service staff, preferably within a Local Government environment. 
  • Demonstrated experience complying with and working to Occupational Health and Safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience and working knowledge of waste management and operations. 
  • Sound knowledge of relevant contemporary resource recovery and waste management practice and legislation.
  • Highly refined customer service and communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly with people from a variety of backgrounds.

Required Certifications & Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualifications in administration, business, management, or a related discipline with relevant experience working in the field.
  • Current driver’s licence.
