Position Summary:
A Light Vehicle Mechanic specializes in maintaining and repairing light vehicles
such as cars, vans, and small trucks. This role involves diagnosing issues,
performing routine maintenance, and executing repairs to ensure vehicles operate
efficiently and safely.
The Light Vehicle Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance, repairs,
and diagnostics on light vehicles. The role includes troubleshooting mechanical
issues, conducting routine inspections, and ensuring that vehicles meet safety and
performance standards. The Light Vehicle Mechanic is essential for ensuring the
reliability and safety of light vehicles through skilled maintenance and repair. This
role requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and strong customer service
skills.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Vehicle Diagnostics and Repairs:
- Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues in light vehicles using specialized tools and equipment.
- Perform repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, steering systems, suspension
and other vehicle components.
- Replace or repair faulty parts such as belts, hoses, and filters.
2. Routine Maintenance:
- Conduct regular maintenance tasks including oil changes, tire rotations, brake
inspections, and fluid checks. -
Inspect vehicles to identify potential problems and recommend necessary services.
- Ensure that all maintenance tasks are completed according to manufacturer
specifications and standards.
3. Customer Service:
- Communicate with customers to understand their vehicle issues and explain the
necessary repairs or maintenance.
- Provide accurate estimates for repair costs and labour time.
- Ensure that customers are satisfied with the service provided and address any
concerns or questions they may have.
4. Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to safety protocols and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
- Follow industry standards and manufacturer guidelines for all repair and
maintenance tasks.
- Keep up to date with the latest automotive technology and repair techniques.
5. Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Maintain detailed records of repairs, maintenance, and parts used.
- Document vehicle issues and the steps taken to resolve them. -
Track inventory levels of parts and supplies, and reorder as needed.
6. Tool and Equipment Maintenance:
- Maintain and calibrate diagnostic tools and repair equipment.
- Ensure that all tools and equipment are in good working condition and report any
malfunctions or needed repairs.
7. Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with other mechanics and workshop staff to ensure efficient operations.
- Assist in training or mentoring junior mechanics or apprentices as required.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; formal training in automotive repair or a related
field (e.g. vocational school, trade certification) is required.
- Volkswagen mechanical an added advantage.
- Vehicle Mechanic / Relevant trade certifications is a prerequisite.
Required Skills:
- Extended knowledge of Volkswagen mechanics.
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in using automotive repair tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Knowledge of vehicle systems and repair techniques.
- Good communication skills and customer service orientation.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy parts and
working in various positions.
- Capability to work in a workshop environment with exposure to noise, dust, and
chemicals.
Working Conditions:
- Work is typically performed in an automotive repair shop or garage.
- May involve working extended hours or weekends depending on the workload and
customer demands.
