Ensure the accurate and timely preparation of annual financial statements in accordance with Australian accounting standards and local government regulations, while maintaining the integrity of financial assets and overseeing a robust internal audit process.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Development of the Annual Financial Statements in accordance with Australian accounting standards and local government regulations.
  • Liaise with the internal auditor - accountability to effectively communicate and collaborate with the internal auditor, while also taking responsibility for investigating and implementing recommended improvements in internal control processes. This includes analysing audit findings, developing action plans, and ensuring their implementation to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of internal controls.
  • Responsible for providing a comprehensive audit trail, documenting all actions taken, and verifying the quality of the implemented improvements.
  • Developing the long-term capital works budget for the organisation.
  • Accounting for Developer Contributions and acquitting the developer contributions against the capital works expenditure.
  • Maintaining the integrity of the financial assets within the asset management system.
  • Preparation of the quarterly financial Capital works reports
  • Maintain the long-term budget model.
  • Knowledge and understanding of implementing personnel practices and staff development schemes, whilst contributing to long term staffing strategies.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

  • Responsibility in policy formulation with well-developed analytical, investigative and system problem solving skills. Essentially obtaining the ability to consider potential risks, benefits and trade-offs associated with each policy option.
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency in the application of Excel to obtain data from a mainframe system for manipulation in a networked PC environment.
  • Skills and knowledge of management reporting procedures and processes including the preparation of monthly reports.
  • Ability to adapt communication style to different individuals and situations in order to lead, motivate and develop others.
  • Networking abilities to cultivate professional connections and alliances including the capacity to identify stakeholder needs and expectations, decide the appropriate action and respond accordingly.
  • Assessing critically diverse alternatives, considering their potential outcomes, risks, and implications. The incumbent must navigate complex scenarios and synthesise information to produce well-informed recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and consult with senior management, team leaders and staff at all levels including external stakeholders, to achieve organisational outcomes and solve specialist problems.
  • Ability to gain the cooperation of and establishing positive working relationships with Managers, Supervisors, peers, and stakeholders, including facilitation and leadership skills to deliver organisational outcomes.
  • A knowledge of the operations and requirements of Local Government accounting is highly desirable.

Required Certifications & Qualifications: 

  • Tertiary qualifications in the field of accounting, commerce, or a related discipline with substantial practical experience in a similar environment.
  • CPA/CA qualified
