At Austral Fisheries we pride ourselves on being a leader in Commercial Fishing. Our fleet plays a critical role in delivering top-quality seafood, and we're seeking dedicated Junior Fleet Engineers in a full-time employment capacity to ensure our vessels are operating at their best.
The Northern Prawn Fishery Junior Fleet Engineers will join us in Cairns and gain hands on experience that will shape their careers.
Junior Engineers will be responsible for supporting the refi t and maintenance of Austral’s Cairns fleet of 11 commercial fishing vessels. This will be carried out by ensuring compliance with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s requirements for domestic commercial fishing vessels. This role involves supporting the management of the efficient and effective execution of each vessel’s maintenance, servicing, and refit programs to ensure all vessels are seaworthy and allow operations to run smoothly.
Ensuring vessel compliance:
maintaining compliance documentation, including engineer logbooks and maintenance records.
Coordinating and conducting vessel maintenance:
assisting our Fleet Engineers with the management and planning of survey refits including organising contractors.
Delivering support to our vessels at sea during seasons:
resolving vessel breakdowns by guiding At Sea Engineers remotely and occasionally travelling to conduct repairs at sea or other ports.

Knowledge about the engineering of vessels through a trade or university-level degree (essential)
Passion for Marine Engineering/ Maritime operations
Demonstrated strong computer literacy skills (Microsoft 365 suite- Word, Excel, Outlook)
Some first-hand at-sea experience to understand the challenging environment we operate in (recreational or commercial).
Ability to work outside normal working hours and under pressure in fast-paced environments.
Team player mindset and a can-do attitude
An ability to promote and uphold a strong safety culture within the business.
