Police Security Services Branch (PSSB) is a business unit of SAPOL. Through the deployment of Police Security Officers (PSOs), PSSB provides a range of security services to the public sector.
The primary functions of PSSB are the provision of:
• Security services to designated South Australian government critical infrastructure, high risk assets and security guards at key Government buildings within the Adelaide CBD;
• A whole-of-government alarm monitoring service; and
• Security of people, places, and property in support of frontline police officers.
The Police Security Officer (OPS3) is appointed to PSSB by the Commissioner of Police pursuant to the Police Act 1998 after completing the training as a Police Security Officer Trainee (OPS1).
The Police Security Officer is responsible for the provision of operational support under the general direction of police officers, Senior Police Security Officers, and Police Security Officer Sergeants to ensure the efficient and effective security of government assets on a 24-hour, 7-day roster basis. Some roles and functions are undertaken on a day shift, Monday to Friday, basis.
The Police Security Officer is required to exercise a range of authorities provided by the Police Act 1998 and other legislation and may be required to carry and use a range of tactical options (including handcuffs, baton, defensive spray, Electronic Control Device, and firearm).
Key Outcomes
• Providing a first response function to security alarm activations and other security incidents;
• Operating and monitoring alarms, CCTV and emergency telephone systems utilising the Government Radio Network, SA Computer Aided Dispatch and computer systems to detect and coordinate the appropriate response to incidents detected;
• Undertaking static, foot and mobile protective security duties including the operation of security equipment pursuant to the Duty Statements of their work location;
• Preparing reports and providing statements required for evidentiary purposes;
• Assisting in the induction and training of other Branch members;
• Engaging with key stakeholders to ensure best practice in customer service;
• Observing, detecting and reporting any breaches of security;
• Developing and maintaining proficiency of systems and databases as required;
• Maintaining electronic and/or manual journals, logs, notebooks as required by policy;
• Provide safe custody services for persons detained in police custody facilities;
• Provide safe custody including on site guarding and transport services for persons detained in lawful custody;
• Provide safe security conveyance for vulnerable persons;
• Provide a range of other frontline services relating to security of places and property in support of sworn frontline police officers.
Special Conditions
• Australian or New Zealand Citizenship or permanent residency is required; and
• Will be subject to a criminal history check.
• Shift work is a requirement of the position (24/7).
• Some intrastate travel may be required
• The incumbent is required to participate in SAPOL’s iEngage Individual Performance Management program.
• Abide by the standards in the Code of Conduct prescribed in the Police Act 1998 and the Police Complaints and Discipline Act 2016.
Training
• Police Security Officer Qualification Program – consisting of a mixture of classroom-based instruction and on-the-job, hands-on training with experienced training staff at the Police Academy and other locations.
Salary
Training - (OPS1) $53,120 per annum
OPS3 - $67,589 plus annual allowance of $2,394.80 upon completion of training (plus shift penalties and overtime)
