The Boating and Dive Officer (BDO) will manage all aspects of boating and diving operations within the Sciences Group. You will be working with a broad cliental base to facilitate diverse achievements – from the up-skilling of STEM students to supporting world leading researchers tackling complex environmental issues involving our most precious resource – water.
Responsibilities include:
- Co-ordination and review of fieldwork involving water-based activities (e.g., boating, diving, snorkelling, kayaking/canoeing - in both marine and freshwater environments) and terrestrial-based activities.
- Holistic induction and training of personnel undertaking fieldwork – from the planning/submission phase of the fieldwork to the safe departure from- and return to- campus, and everything in between.
- In-water assessment and certification of divers
- Direct operational support of fieldwork activities (e.g., operation and supervision of watercraft including launching, piloting, retrieving, as well as participation in dive operations)
- Records management of: qualifications (e.g., boating, diving, first aid), equipment (e.g., licensing/certification, maintenance), risk management (e.g., guidelines, manuals, procedures, risk assessments, SOPs/SWMS), and training (e.g., verifications of competency, inductions)
- Management of planned preventative maintenance schedules for Sciences managed water-based equipment and watercraft
- Ensuring legislative and regulatory compliance for all fieldwork activities
- Management of building wardens and first aid officer complements
The BDO is a member of the Technical Coordination and Logistics (TCL) Team, reporting to the Senior Technical Manager within the Sciences Group at Griffith University.
