The Opportunity
We have a unique opportunity for a Thermal Systems Engineer to join our growing SpAARC team. SpAARC is the Australian Space Robot, Automation and AI Command and Control Centre and the Thermal Systems Engineer is an important role within the team. This role is a critical part of the team that designs, develops, analyses, integrates and tests systems for planetary class rovers and rover sub systems to enable space missions.
Key elements of the role.
This role requires familiarity with full project life cycle and with challenges around space flight. The role needs a deep understanding of the thermal systems engineering lifecycle in particular, as well as designing and implementing systems engineering processes and be able to support commercial activities. The successful candidate will work with our team to work towards successful execution of lunar and potentially Mars missions. We require the role to be able to translate their expertise to the challenges within the terrestrial sector and the Australian resources industry.

Based in West Perth, the key elements of the role are:
Leadership – lead and manage a multidisciplinary team to execute projects efficiently and effectively.
Thermal Systems Engineering Lifecycle – oversee and manage all aspects of the thermal systems engineering lifecycle. Ensure that all elements are conducted according to best practices and industry standards. Ensure the designed systems are appropriately integrated with the mechanical, software and electrical components of the build.
Systems Engineering Processes – Design and Implement effective thermal systems engineering processes to streamline development and mission preparation.
Design and Development – Direct the design, development, analysis, integration and testing of the thermal systems and the integration with mechanical, software and electrical elements. Ensure all thermal systems meet the requirements and specifications for spaceflight missions.
Integration, Testing, Verification and Validation – Plan and supervise I&T activities, as well as verification and validation procedures to ensure system readiness and reliability for space missions.
Technical Expertise – Utilise specialist mechanical and thermal knowledge to guide the development and deployment of space flight systems. Develop innovative solutions to address challenges relating to operating on the lunar surface.
Commercial Support – Work closely with the commercial team to align engineering objectives with commercial goals. Contribute to Business Development and client relationships.
Strategic Planning – Collaborate with the leadership team to develop and implement strategic plans. Assist in setting technical direction and goals.
Project Management – Coordinate with project stakeholders, customers and partners to ensure project deliverables meet mission requirements and meet timelines and budget.
Risk Management – Identify and manage risks throughout the project lifecycle to optimise system performance and reliability during space missions.
This role requires strong leadership, communication and team management skills. It will draw on strong problem solving skills and decision making abilities and requires a high attention to detail.
Your success in securing this role will require:
- Degree in relevant field
- Experience with space missions and understanding of the challenges related to operating systems on the lunar surface
- Experience sending flight systems to space
- Advanced understanding of the lunar surface and the challenges of operating there
- Experience in technical proposal writing and supporting commercial activities
- Experience with mechanical and thermal systems engineering with specific experience in spaceflight analysis and design.
- This role requires full Australian working rights
