The Opportunity
Come and discover the opportunity to join our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility as a Materials Engineering Cadet. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.
Our Cadetship program at BlueScope creates an opportunity to accelerate your personal and professional growth as you combine paid work with study; a two-for-one situation placing you far ahead of your peers! Cadetships provide a combination of part-time study and part-time work, where you will attend university classes one day a week. If you are commencing straight from year 12, you will work casually for your first year, and attend university full-time.
Working within highly skilled and supportive teams, and under the guidance of experienced engineers and technical specialists, you will gain exposure to a range of areas and projects across the business relating to your degree. You will also be able to apply the practical skills and knowledge acquired from BlueScope back into your engineering studies.
Our Cadetships will commence in January 2025.
What Will You Do?
You’ll learn about and be exposed to the relationship between the structure and properties of materials and their economic application.
Rotating through various departments, you’ll apply scientific principles to solve a range of technological problems across physics, chemistry and mathematics. These rotations will allow you to try a bit of everything; allowing you to find the perfect fit for your BlueScope boots. Amongst many stimulating activities, you’ll also assist in the design and control of the processes for producing, shaping, treating and testing our materials. Depending on the stage of your rotation, you may be working within:
- a lab environment, testing the quality and chemistry composition of the steel we manufacture
- an operations teams to manage the flow of work to ensure we meet the production schedule
- a department or processing line to ensure our quality standards are maintained and are updated to ensure we exceed our customers’ expectations
- a technical role solving production or quality improvements, refining the efficiency of the process
