The Opportunity
We have a unique opportunity for a Senior Systems Engineer to join our growing SpAARC team. SpAARC is the Australian Space Robot, Automation and AI Command and Control Centre and the Senior Systems Engineer is an important role within the team. This role is responsible for leading the design, development, manufacture, integration and testing of systems for planetary class rovers and rover sub systems to enable space flight.
Key elements of the role.
This role requires familiarity with full project life cycle and with NASA NPRs. The role needs a deep understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle, designing and implementing systems engineering processes and be able to support commercial activities. The successful candidate will work with the leadership team for strategic planning and ensure successful execution of lunar and Mars missions. We require the role to able to translate their expertise to the challenges within the terrestrial sector and the Australian resources industry.
Based in West Perth, the key elements of the role are:
Leadership – lead and manage a multidisciplinary team to execute projects efficiently and effectively.
Systems Engineering Lifecycle – oversee and manage all aspects of the systems engineering lifecycle. Ensure that all phases are conducted according to best practice and industry standard. Systems includes mechanical, software and electrical.
Systems Engineering Processes – Design and Implement effective systems engineering processes to streamline product development and mission preparation.
Design and Development – Direct the design, development, manufacturing, integration and testing of systems including mechanical, software and electrical elements. Ensure all systems meet the requirements and specifications for space flight missions.
Integration, Testing, Verification and Validation – Plan and supervise I&T activities, as well as verification and validation procedures to ensure system readiness and reliability for space missions.
NASA NPRs – Maintain a deep understanding of relevant NASA procedural requirements (NPRs) and ensure all designs and processes adhere to these standards, or equivalent commercial standard.
Technical Expertise – Utilise specialist systems, mechanical, thermal and electrical knowledge to guide the development and deployment of space flight systems. Develop innovative solutions to address challenges relating to operating on the lunar surface.
Commercial Support – Work closely with the commercial team to align engineering objectives with commercial goals. Contribute to Business Development and client relationships.
Strategic Planning – Collaborate with the leadership team to develop and implement strategic plans. Assist in setting technical direction and goals.
Project Management – Coordinate with project stakeholders, customers and partners to ensure project deliverables meet mission requirements and met timelines and budget.
Risk Management – Identify and manage risks throughout the project lifecycle to optimise system performance and reliability during space missions.
This role requires strong leadership, communication and team management skills. It will draw on strong problem solving skills and decision making abilities and requires a high attention to detail.
Your success in securing this role will require:
- Masters Degree in relevant field
- Experience with lunar and/or Mars missions and understanding of the challenges related to operating systems on the lunar surface
- Experience sending flight systems to the Moon and/or Mars
- Advanced understanding of the lunar surface and the challenges of operating there
- Experience in technical proposal writing and supporting commercial activities
- Experience with mechanical and systems engineering with specific experience in spaceflight hardware.
- This role requires full Australian working rights
