ICU Registrar positions for 2025 are now open for the Alice Springs ICU. One of Australia’s most remote and exciting ICUs, located amongst one of the world’s oldest living cultures.
The newly redeveloped 10-bedded unit manages approximately 650 adult and 50 paediatric admissions per year, comprising a mixture of intensive care and high dependency cases.
Patients admitted to this ICU have a unique demographic that reflects the diverse range of Aboriginal communities in the region. Patients tend to be younger than other ICUs in Australia, and yet carry a heavy burden of chronic disease. Most (95%) of the admissions are emergency in nature, with a wide variety of pathology that can only be read about elsewhere. The hospital serves a community where rates of dialysis dependent renal disease is the highest in the world, and the town is home to the largest haemodialysis centre in the Southern Hemisphere.
Mparntwe, home to the Arrernte people. It is a beautiful and unique part of the world with high quality educational facilities, vibrant community, many art and sporting facilities and a backyard that many travel across the world to see. It is home to the world famous Larapinta trail, and has a rapidly evolving mountain bike scene, as well as important cultural events including the desert art festival and Parrtjima. It has appeal for both the keenest of outdoor adventurers, as well as those seeking cultural diversions.
The position is open to CICMANZ trainees and also those on ACEM, ANZCA and ACCRM pathways.
The Alice Springs Hospital Intensive Care Unit has been accredited as a Level 2 intensive care for 6 months of training and also the regional/rural requirement of ICU training.
There are high levels of consultant support based on the individual level of trainee experience and a robust education programme. Opportunities for additional rotations in Anaesthetics, paediatrics, ED, retrieval and other specialities exist.
