The Opportunity

Come and discover the opportunity to join our Research and Development team at Minchinbury in our BlueScope Building Components business as an Laboratory (Mechanical Testing) Technician.    BlueScope Building Components, a division of BlueScope in Australia, manufactures and markets steel building products, solutions and services through its four leading brands: Lysaght, Fielders, Ranbuild and Kiteleys.

Working in our NATA accredited facility, in this hands-on role, you’ll play a key part in ensuring we deliver superior steel products to the Australian building and construction market.  Working in a metal fabrication and testing environment, you'll work as part of a team of technical specialists to recreate key construction elements (such as building walls and roofs, installing guttering, walling facades and cladding) for product performance testing, including making prototypes, promotional samples and displays. You'll be operating purpose built test rigs to conduct testing, ensuring our products meet the highest standards, providing smarter solutions for our customers. What Will You Do?

As someone who enjoys a hands-on role, you will be performing mechanical testing (cyclic, deflection, impact, proof load tests) to Australian Standard and in-house methods.  You'll be involved in:

  • test preparation - completing test builds and installations in accordance with industry codes and Australian Standards.
  • carrying out and documenting tests on new and existing products and systems in accordance with the test methods and NATA compliance activities. Analysis of data and the preparation of test reports. 
  • developing new testing methods and make recommendations to improve the efficiency and accuracy of test results
  • some test equipment maintenance and internal calibration/checks and general housekeeping
  • organisation and maintenance of the testing workshop\laboratory layout to enable effective running and to provide a safe work environment

More About You

Perhaps you have a materials science/engineering qualification or solid workplace experience in a mechanical testing role or similar, you will bring enthusiasm, work ethic and an ability to go above and beyond for your work colleagues. Some general trade skills coupled with practical building and construction experience would be of benefit in this role.  You'll have:

  • demonstrated experience testing building and/or construction materials
  • an ability to understand and interpret construction drawings along with a tenacious nature to solve problems
  • computer operating knowledge and solid written and verbal communication skills
  • an enjoyment of fast-paced team environments
  • a respect others and embrace a diverse and inclusive workforce
