The Opportunity

•    Use your expertise to design and test mechanical & electrical prototype systems •    Play a key practical role within a new CSIRO initiative in sensor prototyping •    Join the talented & supportive CSIRO Team – Australia's National Science Agency!
Are you passionate about designing and testing mechanical and electronic hardware systems/prototypes, and interested in advancing your skillset through exciting R&D projects? We are currently seeking a motivated Mechatronic Engineer to join our CSIRO team in an exciting position, and it might be the next career step you’re looking for!
CSIRO’s Autonomous Sensors Future Science Platform (AS FSP) focuses on accelerating the generation of new tools to grow the digital decision making within domains, combining fundamental sensor research with autonomous engineering solutions to provide new advanced sensing and platform technologies for the environmental monitoring, health monitoring, mining, agriculture, and manufacturing domains. Within this FSP, we are currently developing a new initiative – The Sensor Prototyping Hub – which is an experimental and new approach to leverage and foster engineering capabilities, by bringing together capabilities and internal facilities across CSIRO to deliver prototypes of lab-based technologies to accelerate field testing and technology iteration for faster commercialisation and realisation of impact.
In this hands-on role, you will play a key role within The Hub and contribute to its objectives by bringing your mechatronics expertise and experimenting skills to deliver the design and integration of mechanical systems, circuits, general & embedded software, and communications. You will also be using your strong problem solving, teamwork and communication skills to use and/or design test equipment to characterise sensor performance or develop documentation to enable researchers to conduct experiments repeatedly in the laboratory or field. Working primarily within our Mineral Resources unit in Lucas Heights, your role will initially focus on projects involving X-ray and radio frequency-based sensors, and their sensor applications would cover a range of industries such as mining, biosecurity and food quality.
If you are motivated by creating new things, experimentation, changing ideas/concepts based on new information & evidence, trying out different approaches, and contributing to making a real difference with your work, this would be an exciting and fulfilling role for you! CSIRO champions in providing a diverse and inclusive culture, supports flexible work arrangements, and offers you excellent professional development opportunities to grow your skills & career.
Applications are invited across two capability levels, and the successful candidate will be appointed at the level commensurate with their skills and experience as determined by the Selection Panel. More detail around this is in the Position Description.

Your duties will include:

Undertaking the design, implementation and validation of relevant mechanical and electronic hardware systems.
Understanding mechanical and electronic integration principles for prototype systems.
Undertaking laboratory testing and field trials of developed systems in various environments.
Performing some non-routine analyses or technology development activities using a range of techniques, often working on a number of parallel tasks.
Working with discretion to decide on the timing of operations within the work team’s plan and plan ahead to meet experimental and/or project demands.
At the higher capability level (CSOF4), you will also be required to undertake a wider variety of tasks with a high degree of specialisation, participate in planning projects and accept responsibility for scheduling & completion of major parts of the projects, and make significant contributions to the interpretation & communication of research or technological results.

Location:  Lucas Height (Sydney), NSW
Salary: AU$68K – AU$101K pa up to 15.4% superannuation (across two levels)
Tenure: Specified term of up to 3 years / Full-time
Reference: 93170

To be considered you will need:

Relevant bachelor’s degree (with honours) or master’s degree in mechatronic engineering, or related area.
High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across internal technical teams.
Demonstrated ability to design and integrate mechanical devices and electronic circuits, including mechanical/electronic design/ basic software and/or firmware development.
A practical, hands-on approach to solving engineering problems.
Demonstrated ability in mechanical and/or electrical design software and document preparation that may describe designs, test results, system validation or manufacture.
Familiarity with the function or use of modern sensors and devices, e.g., laser, vision, inertial, radar or robotics.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team and carry out tasks under general direction from research team leaders.
To be considered at the higher level (CSOF4), you must have significant demonstrated industry experience with mechatronic design activities or prototyping.
