Job TitleResearch Officer/Research AssistantJob DescriptionAn excellent opportunity is available for a Research Officer / Research Assistant to join the Rogers Lab at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.About the PositionMalaria continues to remain a significant global health burden, with Plasmodium falciparum responsible for the majority of disease mortality. An area of intense research focus is the asexual blood stage which is responsible for disease symptoms. This stage begins with the invasion of a single red blood cell by a single malaria causing parasite and is a dynamic and complex biological process. How the parasite can subvert the host membrane-cytoskeletal complex remains an open question. We are looking for a scientist who can help us understand how host derived mechanisms enable apicomplexan parasites to invade their host cells. This role will involve the use of advanced microscopy and /or image analysis techniques and would suit an individual who already has some experience in culturing the malaria parasite, or who has worked with other types of infectious organisms. It is particularly suited to someone who wants to be at the cutting edge of live cell, 4-dimensional microscopy and who would like the opportunity to gain some expertise in this area. We currently use techniques such as lattice light sheet and high-speed confocal microscopy as well as AI based image analysis pipelines for the quantitative analysis of live cell data.  The research officer/assistant will focus on the development and implementation of novel microscopy methods to better understand the process of erythrocyte invasion by P.falciparum. The position will include opportunities to develop skills in advanced live-cell and super-resolution imaging technologies and would suit a candidate with a strong background in Plasmodium cell-biology. A higher degree in biology, microbiology, molecular biology or related field is essential. It is expected that the candidate will have significant experience with Plasmodium culturing and the maintenance of various parasite lines. This position would suit a candidate with a strong cell biology background looking to develop their technical skills in advanced microscopy.  This position will suit an enthusiastic and motivated individual with an independent work ethic, proven project management experience and a collaborative mindset. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required, including the ability to write for publication and presentation of research at conferences. Selection CriteriaEssential Knowledge and Skills:A PhD/Bachelor’s degree with Honours or Master’s in biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biophysics or related discipline. Demonstrated experience in parasite culturing and malaria biology. Ability for analytical thinking and independent problem solving. Experience in manuscript writing and other academic outputs. A track record working both as an independent researcher and in a team-based environment. Excellent communication skills, with an ability to relate to and engage with other staff, external stakeholders, and students. Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and time management skills.  Contribute to scientific discussion and…
