The Organisations
The Cellular Immunology and Vaccinology lab is affiliated to the UNSW School of Biomedical Sciences (SBMS) and the UNSW RNA Institute. SBMS is one of the largest teaching and research intensive Schools at UNSW. It is a vibrant School, a place of work for over 240 staff, more than 150 higher degree students, and many thousands of undergraduate students. The UNSW RNA Institute aims to be the premiere RNA research and pre-clinical manufacturing facility in Australia and seed an RNA-based therapeutics industry in NSW and beyond, building understanding and driving innovation from fundamental RNA biology through to manufacturing of nanoparticle formulations for the treatment of diseases. The Cellular Immunology and Vaccinology lab seeks to leverage the expertise in RNA biology and chemical engineering, fundamental immunology and translational vaccinology in these institutions to develop tomorrow’s vaccines and therapies.

Why this role matters
The successful applicant will be expected to design, undertake, and analyse experiments of independent and original research in the areas of T cell immunity, immunology of infectious diseases, and preclinical vaccine development at the UNSW School of Biomedical Sciences and the UNSW RNA Institute under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Fernandez Ruiz. The position will undertake appropriate laboratory-based activities including the writing of manuscripts based on laboratory results for publication in scientific journals, the identification of opportunities for collaboration and funding, as well as the writing of grant applications to fund research, and laboratory administrative activities including maintenance of safety standards and laboratory protocols necessary to maintain those standards.

Your skills and experience:
- A PhD in immunology or related field.
- Strong background in T cell and dendritic cell biology, particularly in the context of infection.
- Ability to work with mice and other laboratory animals according to ethical guidelines. Experience in work with preclinical models of infection.
- Demonstrated expertise in mammalian cell culture and flow cytometry analyses.
- Excellent ability in analysing data, problem solving and maintaining accurate research records.
- Strong organisation skills. Ability to prioritise tasks to achieve project objectives within timelines with limited supervision.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated by presentation of research results at conferences, internal forums and through manuscript submissions.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships, interacting in a courteous and effective manner with academic, administrative and support staff.
- Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
- Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
