Conservation International, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and other private and public partners have joined together to create the Blue Nature Alliance (the Alliance) with the aim to catalyse actions to conserve 18 million square kilometres of ocean (approximately 5 percent of the global ocean. Working alongside partners, the Alliance scope of work is truly global and aims to protect global ocean biodiversity, build resilience to climate change, promote human wellbeing, and enhance ecosystem connectivity and function.
The Alliance's Regional Officers are responsible for cultivating new relationships and opportunities within a select region or portfolio of counties and will lead our scoping of these opportunities and the development of engagement strategies for Alliance investment and partnership. The Regional Officer will drive the implementation of engagement frameworks and provide technical oversight of grantees and contractors to ensure success for assigned sites. The Regional Officer will also provide technical expertise and guidance to other Regional Officers and partners as appropriate.

The Trust is seeking an Environmental Advisor/Consultant’ for the South East Asia region (SEA) who will be part of a collaborative, dynamic, and a face-paced global team comprised of staff from both Conservation International and The Pew Charitable Trusts, that aims to make an outsized impact on the ocean. The position is based in Sydney and offers an annual salary of $130,000.
The tasks of this role include the following:

• Analyse and advise on policies to devise and implement the environmental protection operations and programs of the Trust and the Alliance
• Serve as technical lead and advisor for Alliance SEA sites
• Provide direct technical support as needed to advance site-based objectives and to build local capacity
• Drive implementation of engagement frameworks and ensure success for assigned sites
• Develop and nurture strong relationships with key government staff, community, and civil society leadership in a portfolio of countries in the SEA to be determined throughout the Alliance's scoping process
• In partnership with these leaders, generate ideas for area-based ocean conservation at scale within target countries in the region, including the creation of new marine protected areas; catalytic investments in existing marine protected areas to improve effectiveness, design, and trialling of innovative models for area-based ocean conservation
• Develop and maintain (updating as necessary) scoping documents for target countries, detailing opportunities for potential investments, political will, significance, achievability, leverage potential, and local engagement
• Regularly communicate with Blue Nature Alliance delivery team and leadership on emerging opportunities and changing priorities to inform the identification of sites for engagement design
• Operate as the Blue Nature Alliance’s focal point for the SEA with partners that are established in Australia (ex: PEW Charitable trust, Conservation International, Minderoo) and have ongoing or prospective program or activities in SEA
• Lead in site-based scoping efforts at regional and national levels to explore new opportunities for engagement by the Alliance to impact ocean conservation goals. This includes working with potential partners and stakeholders to define opportunities and key interventions for Blue Nature Alliance engagement, preparing narrative documents, budget development, and overseeing contract management.
• Where relevant, seek a written commitment from the Government (or group with jurisdiction) to work with the Alliance in support of common goals, including seeking a financial contribution where possible.
• Support identified partners to prepare proposals as needed
• Facilitate grant agreement development and finalization with grantees and Alliance Grants Manager.
• Work with Blue Nature Alliance delivery team to identify potential technical support needs to address capacity gaps or emerging issues in assigned sites as appropriate
• Review grantee reports and make adjustment recommendations to implementing partners and Blue Nature Alliance delivery team as needed
• Operate under the supervision of Conservation International’s Regional Director for the Blue Nature Alliance


Skills and experience required for the position:

• Master in Science, preferably marine and conservation fields
• Bachelor or equivalent in communications
• Minimum 5 years’ experience as senior manager in marine protection and conservation management, including funding and stakeholder engagement
• Experience and a track record of cultivating conservation action in Asia
• Expertise in indigenous-led conservation, transforming governance, ocean science and research, and/or environmental advocacy (policy or communications)
