About the Role:

This is a Permanent Part Time or Full Time position commencing at at 64 hours per fortnight within the Rosella ward, Paediatric Intersive Care Unit (PICU) for the duration of the program. The Advanced Competencies in Paediatric Intensive Care (ACPIC) program is 12 weeks in duration with ongoing employement at the finalisation of the program. You will have regular catch ups with the Nurse Unit Manager and Education Team, have dedicated education team members throughout the program and have group sessions with the PICU Psychologist. 

We are looking for Registered Nurses that are interested in developing paediatric critical care nursing knowledge and skills, to support the growth of our Paediatric Intensive Care Service (PICS) at the Royal Childrens Hospital (RCH). This is a great opportunity for nurses wanting to transition into the paedaitric critical care speciality, through a supportive and structured program. The ACPIC Program is an immersive, challenging and fast paced program and provides the neccessary foundations of paediatric critical care nursing. You will be provided with ongoing support and development within the critical care setting from an experienced nursing education and research team.

There are several established pathways to advanced roles within PICU and the RCH offers a Post Graduate Nursing Scholarship Program.

Program Structure:

Study Day 1: ACPIC Orientation

Study Day 2: Non Invasive Ventilation including prinicples of ventilation, blood gas analysis and care of hte patient.

Study Day 3: Invasive Ventilation  including prinicples of ventilation, sedation and analgesia of the intubated patient, practical skills station and care of the patient with an artificial airway.

Program Support:

Double Time Education: 2-3 times per week

- ECG interpretation

- ABG interpretation

- Cardiac Blood Flow

- Neonatal Care

- Cardiac Anatomy

- X-ray Interpretation

- Resus Drugs

Bedside Education:

Daily Bedside education, exploring patient priority problems.

Assessments:

Non Invasive Ventilation Assesment (theoretical and practical)

Invasive Ventilation Asssessment (theoretical and practical)

Two Comprehensive Patient Assessments

Catch Ups with Nurse Unit Manager and Education team member on weeks 3, 6 and 10 to provide support, mentorship and plan for ongoing educational opportunities.

What you'll achieve:

Integrate nursing health care knowledge and skills to provide safe and effective care
Use best available evidence, standards and guidelines to evaluate nursing performance
Conduct comprehensive and systematic nursing assessments to improve the quality of nursing care
Establish, maintain and appropriately conclude therapeutic relationships

Classification for this position with range from RN Grade  2 Year 2 to Grade 2 Year 8, YP3 - YP9 (FTE base salary $71,333 to $95,378 per annum, plus superannuation).

Your skillls and experience:

Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) administered though the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA)
Demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal and professional development, as evidenced in a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) record/Profession al practice Portfolio
Current Paediatric Nursing experience is desirable

About Rosella Ward - Paediatric Intensive Care Unit

Rosella Ward - Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Ward provides intensive care services to critically ill infants, children and young people for Tasmania, Victoria and southern New South Wales. The RCH delivers the state-wide paediatric, Infant and Perinatal Emergency retrieval (PIPER) service and is a National Funded Centre for paediatric heart transplantation, paediatric liver transplantation (in collaboration with Austin health), Norwood procedure and staged surgical palliation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome and paediatric lung transplant (in collaboration with Alfred health). PICU is a 24 hour service that operates 365 days a year.

Our PICU services include:

Speciality Critical Care Practice for both Medical and Surgical Children
Specialist Paediatric Critical Care Trauma Services
Pre- and Post-Operative care for Cardiac Surgery including Heart Failure and Transplant
Pre- and Post-Operative Care of Organ Transplantation
Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation Service
