Fellow FEL 1 (Remuneration Package $216,434)
Department of Surgery - Orthopaedics
Fixed vacancy for 12 months commencing 05/02/2024 in Alice Springs
Alice Springs Hospital has a catchment area of over 1,000,000 km2. We care for some of the nation’s most socially disadvantaged people, with high levels of morbidity and mortality, many with diseases not seen elsewhere in the country.
The lifestyle is laid back with an emphasis on outdoor activities and the arts. The central desert region of Australia is unique. It is a friendly, welcoming place suited to doctors with a sense of adventure and those interested in indigenous health issues, not generally seen by most doctors in Australia.
Alice Springs is located 1,500km from the next surgical facility and serves a radius of 750km. The medicine is complex with 70% of the work being emergency admissions. Little of the work is routine or predictable. Around 70% of the patients are Aboriginal with an interesting mixture of trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery. Bone infection, hand injury, paediatric orthopaedics and neglected trauma, along with elective surgery including arthroplasty and arthroscopy, offers a diverse range of opportunities for a general orthopaedic surgeon.
We are looking for an enthusiastic fellow. Many opportunities for research and expanding the relationship with Flinders University or the Baker Institute are available.
