This is an immediate start position for minimum 9 month contract.
Remuneration will be paid in accordance with the Aquaculture Award (MA000114) plus mandatory superannuation contributions.
Hours of Work: Approximately 6am to 6pm up to 6 days per week.
The Employee will be required to perform certain duties whilst Master of the Vessel. Although this list is not exhaustive, it is a generalised overview of duties.
• Ensure crew work in such a way, to minimize risks to their health, safety, and others.
• Being involved in and overseeing the induction and ongoing training of crew and ensure safe work practices are continually developed and maintained. Ensure that all training is recorded on communication forms and passed on to the Farm Manager.
• Ensuring that only employees and approved maintenance contractors come onboard or attend any work sites.
• Documenting bait received, fed out, uneaten feed and daily fish behavior.
• Report daily to the Farm Manager.
• Directing and training crew on feeding in accordance with daily feed plans and correct feeding techniques.
• Working the vessel within the regulations and relevant fisheries management rules. Ensuring that you are familiar with restricted areas regarding other farming operations, fisheries licensing conditions, national parks and within the bounds of safe and good seamanship.
• Keeping the vessel clean, tidy, and safe with safety and spare equipment accessible and organized.
• Ensuring the engine room is operating properly. The skipper is ultimately responsible for the whole vessel.
• Routinely checking all is in order and secure and dry in the chain locker, void spaces, bilge, steering compartment etc. (This is just basic seamanship and neglecting this responsibility is not acceptable).
• Routinely checking lifting gear is in a safe state (blocks, wire, ropes, shackles, hoses).
• Ensuring vessel is berthed properly and manned sufficiently, not leaving inexperienced deckhands to be responsible for securing the vessel.
• Ensuring all necessary gear, oils, jobs etc. are ordered and performed in a timely manner
• Carry out farm maintenance and repairs as required by The Farm Manager.
• Assisting in transfer of tuna to farms
• Assisting in general tuna farm duties including feeding, harvesting, processing and maintenance.
• Ensuring own qualifications are kept up to date.
• Maintaining Ship’s Log daily as per statutory requirements and farm requirements. Entries should include date, position, weather, personnel on board, departure times, names of current crew at the commencement of each trip, fuel/water/oil taken on and any other relevant information should be properly recorded to be able to refer to it later.
MASTERS’s SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Ensure that health and safety are taken into account when new or changed methods, processes, products, harmful substances are implemented
• Provide proper instructions and training in health and safety for new Crew and for Crew redeployed into new jobs.
• Take the necessary precautions, (so far as reasonably practical,) to protect contractors and members of the public whilst on company vessels & premises.
• Ensure all accidents reported are fully investigated and the appropriate corrective action has been taken. Set the example for compliance with the safety policy and maintain a continued involvement, interest and enthusiasm in the health and safety programme.
• Ensure the necessary checklists are in use to help provide a safe work environment at all work sites and that the required frequency of checking is maintained.
• Ensure that effective induction is provided to all new and transferred Crew and that an induction checklist specific to each work site is developed, maintained, and used.
