Canva's 2 Step Plan

Canva has had a ‘simple’ Two-Step plan since the very beginning: (1) Become one of the most valuable companies in the world; (2) Do the most good we can.

With the goal of Step Two in mind, we joined Pledge 1% — a global initiative where companies give 1% of their profit, equity, product, or time back to their communities — to help bring our ‘Be a Force For Good’ value to life. And we’ve committed to donating all four of these areas as part of the pledge.

Our founders then pledged the majority of their equity (30% of Canva) to do good in the world through the Canva Foundation, where we believe there's enough money, enough goodwill, and enough creativity and innovation to help solve the world's biggest challenges in our lifetime.

Because of our Two-Step plan, both the Canva Company and the Canva Foundation are key to bringing this 31% pledge to life and every Canvanaut helps contribute towards this mission.

Canva has crazy big Step 2 goals and we need a passionate Step 2 Designer to help us communicate our mission and our impact to our team, our users, and beyond.

Our focus areas - These 4 pillars underpin our Step 2 work:

  • Empowering Nonprofits
  • Quality Education
  • No Extreme Poverty
  • Helping Local Communities

The Foundation team

  • The Foundation is the giving vehicle that funds and supports different programs within our 4 pillars. We're also the team that exists to empower and support all teams across Canva to get involved in our Step 2 work, acting as the 'invisible glue' to create a cohesive Step 2 strategy and impact across Canva.
  • Canva seeks to be a global leader in using design to communicate impact. This is especially true for our own impact, where we want to use our amazing design tools and features to showcase our Step 2 impact. Your role will be focused on doing precisely this and building our Step 2 brand, storytelling, and comms.

The role

  • You will work with and across all other Canva campuses. You will be reporting to the Head of Social Impact, and working closely with the Canva Brand and Marketing teams.
  • Your role will support all 4 of our Step 2 pillars.

As the Step 2 Design Lead you will

  • Work with nonprofits, for-purpose organisations and Canvanauts to source and capture impact and stories related to our volunteering projects, our nonprofit product and our Step 2 focus areas.
  • Prepare comms and content for all Step 2 cadences, activities and reporting requirements (i.e. Force for Good Fridays, annual impact report, season openers, website, external blog, board meetings, sit-downs, Force for Good volunteering playbook etc).
  • Have the vision to imagine, innovate, create and execute on a brand and communication style for the Canva Step 2 brand to clearly communicate our goals and impact towards these goals (by cutting through noise in a world saturated with information).
  • Work as the lead and only designer in the Foundation team, working with people across a small team who wear many hats.
  • This means you need to be someone who can be a Jack of all trades - covering copy, design, comms strategy, templates, videos, facilitating workshops, sharing knowledge, marketing, social media, storytelling and all general communications, alongside design.
  • Work with production companies at times and with our Brand Studio.
  • Be a champion for the Canva product and help the communities we are working with tell their own stories through Canva.

What you'll do and achieve

  • Owning the implementation of Canva Step 2 Brand Guidelines and Toolkits
  • Designing on-brand comms for all Step 2 work (internal and external)
  • Developing clear messaging frameworks and communicating stories of impact from our internal and external programs
  • Producing the Canva Impact Report 2024 (includes Sustainability Impact)
  • Owning the creative for the Step 2external website and updates
  • Owning the creative for the Step 2 internal landing pages (Community Projects, Force for Good Fridays, Force for Good Week, Peak Volunteering moments etc)
  • Creating Canva Step 2 assets for Season Openers
  • Facilitating brand workshops for all Canva Team members who will be working on/with this brand to educate and empower them
  • Developing strong relationships with our nonprofit partners and understanding their work and their impact so that we can create simple impact reporting collateral they can use to communicate their impact back to Canva
  • Creating design collateral and streamlined processes for capturing the social impact we achieve through our work
  • Building a strong ‘give back’ culture at Canva through amazing internal communication and celebrations for achieving our impact goals

What we’re looking for

  • Ability to work with a global team - you will be based in Sydney, but will support all Canva Offices (including Austin in the US, Shanghai and Beijing in China, and Manila in the Philippines).
  • We’re looking for the go-to person for the Canva Foundation team and the broader Canva team to help us communicate our Step 2 impact through design, content and storytelling.
  • You will be capturing stories of impact, creating comms to encourage employee engagement in our Step 2 work, and supporting the growth of our internal and external programs and partnerships.
  • You will be a creative lead who is hungry for opportunity and passionate about social impact initiatives.
  • It is highly desirable for you to have demonstrated experience in creating and designing for philanthropic organisations and social impact programs, with an ability to communicate to a wide variety of different audiences through different mediums and channels, including story-telling and data visualization.
  • You will be calm and approachable, exemplifying the Canva value of 'make complex things simple'.
  • The ability to engage people in both a face-to-face and remote/virtual world.
  • The ability to work with and brief other creatives to help achieve your goals.
  • A solid understanding of tech culture and how to leverage that to achieve your goals.
  • An appetite for "structured chaos" (the ability to juggle multiple workstreams at once) and being comfortable in ambiguous environments.
  • The ability to develop a broad range of relationships quickly.
  • An action-oriented attitude and track record.
  • Humility and kindness.
  • Most importantly, you’re passionate about making a positive difference and helping us achieve Canva’s Step 2 vision and strategy.

What's in it for you?

Achieving our crazy big goals motivates us to work hard - and we do - but you'll experience lots of moments of magic, connectivity and fun woven throughout life at Canva, too. We also offer a stack of benefits to set you up for every success in and outside of work.

Here's a taste of what's on offer:

  • Equity packages - we want our success to be yours too
  • Inclusive parental leave policy that supports all parents & carers
  • An annual Vibe & Thrive allowance to support your wellbeing, social connection, office setup & more
  • Flexible leave options that empower you to be a force for good, take time to recharge and supports you personally
