DIESEL MOTOR MECHANIC AND MAINTENANCE FITTER (2 POSITIONS)

Maintenance Fitter Job Tasks and Duties:
• Checks prepared metal components for accuracy, using measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers and rules;
• Lifts and hoists components on to working surface, lays out and marks reference points, and aligns parts using measuring instruments;
• Drills holes and taps threads for bolting parts together, and assembles parts and sub-assemblies;
• Verifies alignment of, and clearances between, components using measuring instruments;
• Cleans and lubricates assembled articles;
• Mark out stock to be shaped and formed into metal parts for other workers;
• Fit and assemble non-metallic parts;
• Test assemble articles in workshops to ensure accuracy of fit. Keep the workshop clean;
• Dismantle and remove engine assemblies if required, and transmissions, the steering mechanisms or other components, and check parts;
• Repair and/or replace worn or defective parts;
• Organize inspection and maintenance of machines and plant;
• Perform hydraulic repairs to plant and machinery;
• Maintain, repair and service light vehicles;
• Attend to vehicle breakdowns on civil construction sites to ensure prompt repairs of vehicles to minimise vehicle down-time;
• Arrange for transport of vehicles requiring maintenance and repairs;
• Welding of parts and assemblies;
• Relief machinery operation duties if required;
• Maintaining a safe and clean working environment;
• Adhering to strict Occupational Health and Safety requirements;
• Supervision of staff.

Diesel Motor Mechanic Job Tasks and Duties:
• Detecting and diagnosing faults in engines and parts
• Dismantling and removing engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms and other components, and checking parts
• Repairing and replacing worn and defective parts and reassembling mechanical components, and referring to service manuals as needed
• Performing scheduled maintenance services, such as oil changes, lubrications and engine tune-ups, to achieve smoother running of vehicles and ensure compliance with pollution regulations
• Reassembling engines and parts after being repaired
• Testing and adjusting mechanical parts after being repaired for proper performance
• Diagnosing and testing parts with the assistance of computers
• May inspect vehicles and issue roadworthiness certificates or detail work required to achieve roadworthiness
