Job Description:
As a Lab Technician at Ellerslie Hop Estate, your primary responsibility will be to operate and maintain HPLC systems for the analysis of hop quality, including key components like alpha acids. You will also use other laboratory instruments such as pH meters and UV-spectrophotometers to conduct additional tests to ensure the highest standards of hop quality.
This role requires a motivated, self-starter who can manage their own workload independently while collaborating with production and other teams to ensure that the hops meet industry requirements. You will play a key role in maintaining laboratory equipment, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the accuracy of test results.
Key Responsibilities:
• Independently operate and maintain HPLC machines for the analysis of hop components, including alpha acids and other quality indicators.
• Conduct additional laboratory tests using pH meters, UV-spectrophotometers, and other analytical instruments to assess hop quality.
• Prepare and calibrate laboratory equipment, reagents, and standards for testing.
• Perform data analysis, generate reports, and ensure that results meet required specifications for hop quality.
• Troubleshoot and resolve any issues with laboratory equipment, especially HPLC systems.
• Work closely with production teams to share results, monitor quality, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
• Ensure the laboratory is well-organized, stocked with necessary supplies, and adheres to health and safety protocols.
• Maintain accurate and detailed records of all tests, processes, and findings, ensuring compliance with internal and external regulatory requirements.
• Monitor and adjust the performance of laboratory instruments to maintain optimal functionality.
Key Requirements:
• Relevant Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in a laboratory environment, with hands-on experience in operating and maintaining HPLC systems. Experience with pH meters, UV-spectrophotometers, and other common analytical equipment is highly desirable.
• Self-Motivated: Ability to work independently and manage your workload efficiently with minimal supervision.
• Technical Skills: Proficient in laboratory techniques, including HPLC, sample preparation, calibration, and data analysis. Experience with other testing methods such as pH meters and UV-spectrophotometers is an advantage.
• Attention to Detail: Strong organizational skills and the ability to work with precision and accuracy.
• Qualifications: A tertiary qualification in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field is preferred.
• Team Collaboration: Strong communication skills to work effectively with other departments, including production and quality control teams.
