Surgery Vet Nurse

ARH Essendon Fields

Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Essendon is a 24-hour emergency and specialist referral hospital with a dedicated team working across ECC, Internal Medicine and Surgery. We aim to provide a comprehensive emergency and referral service to veterinarians, their clients and their patients.

We are seeking a patient-focused veterinary nurse to work with 3 ACVS boarded Specialist Surgeons, a surgical Resident, a surgical Intern and a team of highly skilled surgical nurses. Primarily focused on inpatient care of hospitalised surgical patients and discharge of surgical inpatients, with the support of the ECC team.

Responsibilities of the position:

• Surgery inpatient management, feeding, toileting and medicating, including care and maintenance of drains and feeding tubes etc
• Maintenance of paperless patient charts and records (Smartflow)
• Carry out surgical patient discharge procedures and client communication

Qualifications and skills required:

• Minimum of 3 years’ nursing experience, preferably in a specialist/referral or emergency environment (but not essential)
• Minimum of Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or equivalent
• Final year veterinary students will also be considered
• Knowledge of RxWorks and Smartflow operation will be highly regarded (but not essential)
• Ability to work sole charge, but also as part of a close-knit team
• Exceptional time management and organisational skills
• Exceptional customer service and strong communication skills
• Highly motivated, strong work ethic, mature and responsible

This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic veterinary nurse or final year veterinary student to demonstrate and expand on their existing skills and knowledge. The successful candidate will be exposed to a varied and interesting caseload. There is also opportunity to pick up additional shifts during the week if desired for the right candidate.

Does the thrill of trauma and emergency medicine excite you, but you remain as cool as a cucumber?

The Emergency & Critical Care department at the Animal Referral Hospital in Essendon Fields has two full-time maternity leave cover positions available for a nurse to join our hard-working team that is dedicated to best possible patient outcomes and who works within client needs.

This position may be suited for an experienced GP nurses with a keen interest in emergency & critical care medicine. The successful applicants will need to be available for varying day, evening and overnight shifts on a fortnightly roster in our 24/7 hospital.    

About ARH:

The Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Essendon has a 24 hour per day, 7 days a week, dedicated emergency and critical care (ECC) service. The hospital is staffed with an outstanding team of emergency veterinarians and nurses working alongside specialists in ECC / internal medicine and surgery. We aim to provide a responsive, comprehensive emergency and referral service to Victorian veterinarians, their clients and their pets. We provide high professional and clinical standards, which are tempered with genuine care and compassion.

ARH is well equipped with CT, MRI, digital radiology, ultrasound, endoscope, in-house laboratory, ventilators, patient monitors and sophisticated emergency and surgical facilities. ARH utilises fully integrated Rx works software and operates with Smartflow electronic hospital charting. We also have the added advantage of internal referral to our associate specialist departments in surgery, medicine and advanced imaging. 

Our nursing team is highly valued and encouraged to utilise their skills and work autonomously to support our specialist veterinarians in providing exceptional patient care. Nurses also have access to regular free in-house continuing education sessions to develop their existing skillset and knowledge.

Role:

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to;

• Admission & triage of emergency patients
• Forward planning and providing direct and individualised patient care for critically ill patients
• Performing diagnostics and treatments
• Plan and perform anaesthesia for ill or unstable patients
• Record all care information concisely and accurately
• Work directly under the guidance and support of veterinarians and senior nurses
• Liaise knowledgeably and accurately with staff and clients.

About you:

We are searching for an experienced nurse who possesses the ability to multitask and work well as a team in an often face-paced environment. Specialist hospital experience is preferable, but a strong general practice background is welcome and looked highly upon. On the job training will be provided with ongoing support by senior nurses and veterinarians however applicants must possess the ability to work unsupervised as well as demonstrate reasonable proficiency in basic nursing skills such as intravenous catheter placement, fluid therapy, drug dose calculations, use of monitoring equipment and assessing vital signs, as the role involves a degree of autonomy and use of initiative.

Essential Attributes;

• Minimum of 2 years’ fulltime experience in general practice post qualification
• Certificate iv in veterinary nursing or higher
• A professional and positive demeanour
• Ability to work efficiently with initiative in a face-paced environment
• Available to work varying days/evenings/night shift
• Excellent communication skills
• Well-developed organisational skills
• Interest in emergency & critical care medicine
•  

Desirable attributes;

• Previous experience in an emergency or specialist hospital (but not essential)
